Mexican Regulators Suspend Aerocalifornia, ExpressJet - Govt
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES July 23, 2008 17:32 ET (21:32 GMT)
MEXICO CITY (Dow Jones)--Mexico's Communications and Transport Ministry, or SCT, said Wednesday that its civil aeronautics regulator has suspended the operations of airlines Aerocalifornia and ExpressJet pending payment of outstanding fees for use of Mexican airspace.
Aerocalifornia, a Mexican low-cost carrier that was grounded once in 2006 for safety reasons, owes the government 259.6 million pesos ($25.9 million) in monthly fees dating back to 2005, the SCT said in a press release.
Houston-based ExpressJet, which provides service in Mexico to low-cost airlines Continental Express and Delta Connection, owes MXN44.6 million in unpaid fees since 2006, the ministry added.
"In this difficult situation for commercial aviation due to increasing jet fuel costs, it's the authorities' duty to take care that airlines compete in equal circumstances," the SCT said. "It's not permissible that while the vast majority of airlines comply with all their payment obligations, some companies do not."
The SCT said it is encouraging other airlines to increase flight availability so that passengers of ExpressJet and Aerocalifornia aren't affected by the suspension.

And if that wasn't enough, XJT threatened with delistment.
