CLE is the smallest base but most people usually get EWR or CLE if they request it during new hire training. If you don't get your first choice while you're in training you should be able to hold it with 4-6 months, maybe sooner.

CLE is the most senior base. So, you will probably not be able to hold it right out of training. You will mostl likely be sent to EWR initially, but should be able to bid into CLE whenever they run the next perm bid after you are online. Probably 4-6 months to hold CLE.

It's the most senior base for Captains, not FO's. All those that have come through the pipe this year that I know wanted CLE got it. IAH is the toughest to get from what I've been told.

Well that's why I shouldn't give advise on FO's in CLE when I'm a CA in IAH. Thanks for the updated and accurate info Nova.;)

your best bet is to be the first class of the month. man power planning has more options as to where they are sending people. IE if next month they have 5 CLE slots and the first class in month takes all five guess how many CLE slots are left for the second class. more or less you are at there mercy. what they need is where your going to be sent. perm bids have been coming out very often so bidding back to CLE should go quick.

Our entire class got the base we wanted in the last perm bid, but we all got sent to CLE for 3-4 months first before we can go to our permanent base. I guess the same has happened to other classes. The class behind us all went to EWR first, then their base. I believe it's going EWR, CLE, and IAH as junior-senior. Most people wanted IAH.

Basically, it's a crapshoot. But expect if you want IAH, to spend some time in CLE or EWR first.

BTW... EWR is not that bad. There are several crashpads, parking is a breeze there if you get South Street parking.. and the people rock. Don't be upset if you get EWR.

Yep, EWR rocks! It is a great base to fly out of!

Occasionally I do know something of use around here. :D

Most people went to EWR out of my class. The one who wanted CLE got it and there were 6 or so of us that got IAH. The best way, as previously mentioned, is to plan on going to EWR and if you end up getting your first choice right away it's an added bonus.

....

I've heard growth at CLE is rather stagnant...so unless you have a reason for wanting to live there you'd probably be better off at EWR or IAH for the long term.

I know a number of FOs and CAs in CLE and you are right about the stagnant growth in Cleveland. IAH and EWR are the best places to be right now, but from what I heard, this past class was only give the choice of CLE or EWR. They didn't need the FO staffing in IAH at that moment.

I know I don't belong on this thread, but I do have some quality of life comments about CLE.

1) Making approx. 18k a year, Cleveland is the place to be. Rent is dirt cheap and it's hard to find a bar that doesn't have beer and wing specials whenever there is some sort of sports event going on.

2) Lots to do in Cleveland when there isn't snow on the ground. The Metroparks are great for biking and walking in, and there's even some pretty decent fishing in the rivers and lakes... as long as you aren't relying on this for your main source of protein.

3) The Rapid is a good source of transportation to and from downtown bars. Just don't miss the last train 'cause it's a real expensive cab ride back out to the crashpads.

4) Be aware that, as far as I can tell, YOU CAN"T BUY BOOZE ON SUNDAY! Plan ahead! I may be wrong, but in my part of town you can't buy any sort of liquor on Sunday. What a drag.

Look, I can't comment on Xjet deals, but if you are stuck in Cleveland, there really is plenty to do. My only observation is that most people are ready to jump into a prop after just a few short months here. However, being based in Cleveland and living nearby will always, in my book, be better than commuting.

ps - There must be really good golf in Cleveland. My Ass. Chief spends at least three days a week golfing.

It was reported on the radio this morning that there will be a big announcement from CAL regarding their CLE operations. It will be something along the lines of a 10 year commitment to CLE. That plus the word that CAL is funneling recalls to CLE points to some growth in the future there.

I saw the same news teaser " Big anouncement from CAL Tommorow"

I thought F66k there gonna close CLE and make it an all express deal with more larger Commutair planes. I'm such a pessimist.

I was grateful that the news put the story on early in the 11:00 news. Just another 10 years of CAL at CLE....wheew Dodged another bullet.
