Hey everyone, just thought I would mention this to the XJ guys, I am sure everyone read the newslaunch today err yesterday I guess it is now. I see they are going to paint ALL of our aircraft. That really shocks me, I assumed that they were holding off on the avros because they would go away after the 2007 agreement. Any comments?

i'm not implying mesaba or northwest is in trouble, just brought up an interesting observation i had a while back.. seems like when an airline is in dire financial trouble, one of the first things they do is repaint their aircraft.

Hey, I'm glad they are painting the Avros. I don't see them going anywhere for a while. Now, how about painting the pink Saabs? I think some of them look as bad or worse than the worn Avros' paint.

Sounds like both saabs and avros will get new paint... and since the new NWA painscheme is a cost savings measure why would we repaint our planes in a more expensive scheme? Not to mention the new brand that NWA is sporting, it would make ZERO sense to repain the planes in an old scheme. So... my guess is the silver bullet scheme will be on XJ planes in due time. Hey... and how about those new interiors? Sound slike XJ is realizing some cash has to be spent to keep our planes looking "world class."

FSB95 - NW might be having financial issues, but I'd hardly call it DIRE. Not to mention the fact that this scheme is a smart one, unlike the idiots over at UAL trying to pass theirs off as a cost savings measure.

Jet airplanes need to be painted every six years or so to prevent corrosion on the skin. Even if they are due to be retired next year they still need to paint them to when they are due to keep them airworthy. The new NWA colors are about as cheap of a paintjob that exsits. It only makes sense to utilize the new scheme.

My response in somewhat on the same terms as what DoinTime said.
When NWA first started the new paint scheme, I was like many and said to myself, "Well, they can't be losing too much money, since they have the free capital to spend on that."

But, after further research, and asking some people, I learned that NWA, like many airlines, has a repaint schedule, and are constantly taking aircraft out of service to be repainted. It is just a cost of business that has been planned for, just like replenishing oil and tires. Only now, the "oil and tires" are a cheaper, more economical paint scheme.

Has anyone else noticed that some of the 747-400's are starting to show a little "yellowing" color?

Someone in my crashpad (your old one, Spin555) told me he heard they might even be looking to buy more Avro's from some overseas regionals. I was under the impression 1) they want to get rid of the Avro in 2007 and 2) we are locked in on the number of Avros and there is no way we would ever get more than the 35 we have remaining.

Any thoughts?

Speed - unless NWA pilots alter their scope, we're locked into the 35 we operate. As for the timing of things... it seems coincidental that this repaint plan will take about 7 years. Why would they embark on such a program if they planned on getting rid of the planes in 3 years. 9 saabs and 6 avros a year take about 7 years to paint. It will be interesting to see what happens.
