My criteria are decent hotels with clean rooms, comfortable beds, safe neighborhoods, reasonable prices, close proximity to decent dining, etc. Instant "F" for crummy mattresses, no cable, crappy neighborhoods, no heavy drapes.

super 8 in some northern remote cities where they are the only hotel in town
best: still need to find a job that will put me in a nice upscale hotel.
till then: grouse mountain lodge, whitefish / kalispell, Montana
Motel 6 in KMTV(Martinsville, VA). Holy $hit what a bad hotel . Got there at about 7-8 pm local, 1 bar open in the whole town(in the only other hotel in town) a mile away. 80$ a night w/ a "continental" breakfast that included coffee(thank god) and little generic(sp?) danishes. Oh yea, one more thing, Yellow Cab did not take credit card!!!!!!
Best:
Westin at HXD (Hilton Head Island)
btw~the beds ARE heavenly!
Worst:
The Briar Inn at LWB (Lewisburg, WV)
when I asked what there was to do around there I was told, and I quote, "there is a Bob Evans being built." We ended up driving 3 hours to Richmond, VA to watch the nascar race.
