I've gotten this time and time again. I had a friend who is a female calling around for me to help me find some CFI jobs out there in Wisconsin. She states this job is for a friend of mine and was wondering if you had any openings.
If they did she would get the number for the company and I would call and get the info needed. Well they keep calling her back and wanting to interview her. She has no qualifications and hasn't sent a resume or anything. They called over like 5 times in a week. She finally yelled at the Mananger of the FBO...saying she didn't want the job...that her friend was in desperate need of the job and to call him please.
Well I have called them and they said we have no openings at this time...just openings I guess for women! They have my resume and everything. I don't know if I would want to work for a FBO like that!

So has anyone ran into this anywhere else????

Triple J,

If it's any consellation, women and minorites are regularly discriminated against in the industry too.

Kum-bi-ya . . . . kum-ba-ya

-Boo!

Yeah - sorry man. I don't think you'll get too much sympathy. I've personally had two different CFI's question the quality of my flying (without ever flying with me) because the instructors for three of my ratings were women.

Fortunately these types of people are getting old and gradually leaving the industry.

TripleJ,

Dude!

I guess the unasked question here is.....

Why do you have your girlfriend doing your work for you? Can't you get a job on your own?

I wouldn't have hired you either. I mean, look at the situation. Your girlfriend calls and says, "Please hire my boyfriend." You call and say, "Hey, I'm the boyfriend whose gal called and tried to get a job for me."

TripleJ-

I'm with English.

Don't know where you live, but go out there yourself and find a job.

Doesn't look good if you have other people look for you.

Just a thought.

OK, Stupid question, this guy is looking for a CFI job, If Iam not mistakin from his post.

So why this thread in the Cargo Hanger.
Maybe Iam missing something, and by the way yes you should do your own dirty work.

Sorry I was working 80+hours a week

During that month of searching I was working 80+ hrs a week and had no time to search for a job...I had a hard time fitting in eating and sleeping let alone searching for a job.

I've never had a woman flight instructor, I was just pissed that they were holding the position for a woman that's all. When the guy on the phone said you flight instructors are a dime a dozen these days, but was persistent in calling an unqualified candidate...such is life!

When you said that, I feel I should offer a tip.

Tip: Don't start sleeping with your flight instructor while they are preparing your for your private pilot checkride.

That is all.

Or shagging fellow lady CFI's on company time

But oh was it fun!

did you ever consider that maybe, possibly, there is/was something in your persona they didnt perhaps agree with, and probably didnt want to include in their place of business???

...their response covers more than just one particular "hire women first" situation ;)

*this coming from a guy who used to do the interviews/hiring for limo drivers many moons ago, and used that line one more than one occasion*

Finding even a part-time job as a flight instructor IS A FULL-TIME JOB. You've narrowed it down to Wisconsin, which is a start, now pick a general area and start knocking on doors. When you find an operator you like, then you can focus by constantly keeping in contact with them until an opportunity arises (and it will!).
PS: Stay away from anyone who says flight instructors are a dime a dozen...that's a bad management attitude and reflects how you'll probably be valued as an employee. Good luck.
I would personally recommend Wisconsin Aviation in Watertown and Madison.

I got the CFI's are a dime a dozen rant from the guy that owns the FBO over at Manitowoc...magnus aviation. I'm glad I waited a bit and eventually went on to work for Jeff Baums charter deparment. Got a ton of experience over there and was paid pretty good. The last year I worked there I was pulling in almost 39,000 a year flying Aztecs, 414's and other piston twins.

Hi!

I've seen the woman thing, from both ends.

My wife went to her boss to ask for a promotion or a raise, and he told he he only promoted men, and to quit bothering him. The weird thing was, he was upset when she left the company!

In 2 different industries, I was turned down for over 10 jobs because I was a guy.

I also heard, from a manager in a 3rd industry: "If this type of applicant (referring to me) doesn't work, we can always get more." She lasted 2 years as the manager and then moved on to another town (she had to run fast to make it out of town).

My advice if you meet a situation that doesn't work for you:
Try, try again. Just keep trying. That's all you can do. Also, don't whine during your next interview about the problems you're having getting hired.

PS-I believe that in GRB you can at least get a part-time instructor job, if not full time. PT could lead to FT down the road.
