How much would working line service help me getting in with a charter company? I would have to move across the country. I'm instructing right now, I have low time. A pilot i know that works for the company said this is the best way in. I'm just looking for some insights? any opinions would help thanks guys...

I would say yes. It is a good way to network with other pilots and transients. Will you have flying job if you move? I don't think I would move just to work line service.

Good Luck

the pilot i know said my chances are really good. They hired a line guy last month with really low time...

Probably not a good idea

I have heard of guys just talking to people in FBO's and getting hired but you don't hear people saying be a janitor. Don't be a lineman unless you need money and then there are better jobs than that. With your present hours it would be better to keep instructing or ferrying to get to 1200/150ME the minimum for most multi 135 companies.

I think working line service is a great way to make connections. If the airport your considering has other opportunities. I took a line service position with Jetcorp @ SUS several years ago. I was told I had to be a line guy for 6 months and then they would move me into charter. I was flight instructing in the mornings and working line on second shift. As it turned out 6 months later I quit jetcorp to work for a higher paying flight department at the same airport. Go make the connections, they are not going to come to you. Just make sure you keep flying, dont want any gaps in the log book....

A few years back I hired a line guy to work for us. Why, certainly not because of his time, but because he was a known quantity. Put simply I liked his work ethic, he would instruct in the morning then work the line in the evening. Plus, he always had a great attitude, especially since he had no idea we were looking to hire an additional pilot.

Flight time has its place in aviation, but in the corporate world you will find that most people HIRE FOR ATTITUDE AND TRAIN FOR SKILL.
