I don't understand this. Will UPS have dedicated DHL flights that are 100% DHL freight? Why would they do something like this when they will just fly freight on UPS aircraft and sort in UPS hubs? Does UPS not have a ramp in Flint maybe?

Building A Concrete Apron

Expansion will service aircraft for a new DHL building at Flint airport

By Aram Kalousdian, Editor -- Michigan Contractor and Builder, 6/16/2008

A cargo area apron expansion for a new DHL building at Bishop International Airport in Flint is under construction. The project includes paving concrete apron 17 inches thick that will service aircraft for the new DHL building. Six-S Inc., of Waterford Township, is the prime contractor for the project. The apron is located on the south side of old Bristol Road. Approximately 29,000 square yards of P-501 airport specification concrete is being placed for the apron.

A new 220-vehicle parking lot for the new DHL building has also been constructed on the north side of old Bristol Road. That consists of 15,000 tons of modified Michigan Department of Transportation 3C/4C hot mix asphalt pavement, sand subbase and aggregate base. There is new electrical and lighting for the apron and parking lot.

The project includes 13,900 cubic yards of sand subbase and 4,250 cubic yards of P-209 crushed aggregate base course for the apron and parking lot. New drainage features are also included in the parking lot and the apron, which consist of approximately 2,500 feet of storm sewer ranging from 12-inch-diameter concrete pipe to 30-inch-diameter concrete pipe.

"Old Bristol Road was widened to provide access to the apron and parking lot," Tim Baugher, project manager for Six-S Inc., said.

The approximately $2.3-million project began in September 2007 and it is expected to be completed in July. Subcontractors on the project include Ace Asphalt, of Flint (hot mix asphalt paving) and C&G Myers, of Milford (underground).

Shooter,

What you don't understand is that as soon as it's completed, DHL plans to shut it down but not sell it, use the UPS ramp instead, and then b!tch to the world about how expensive it is to fly in and out of Flint!!!

Yeah.....that sounds about right.

LOL, that sounds like them alright. It sure is confusing for them them to continue a ramp expansion they will never use. The parking lot, sure but its already done. Maybe it was a contract and they had to follow through. But they are not so stellar on their contract promises of past so I'm still confused.

We do not currently fly to FNT. We have a large presence in LAN with multiple flights and a large number of feeders that service the smaller cities in Michigan. If there is enough volume to justify a dedicated flight to FNT, UPS will probably fly it, otherwise FNT volume will go to LAN and be trucked to FNT.

What's wrong with the sort facility in CVG?!? UPS flies there, it's easy trucking from SDF... crazy I tell ya.

That could explain the continued construction. Thanks, I did not know if you guys serviced it from air already.

The 2 airports are only 50 miles away, doubt highly we would fly to FNT. LAN is a pretty big opertion for us. Everything going to Michigan minus Detroit goes to LAN.

DHL have cancelled most of the feeder operators as of the end of this month. Seems they will be trucking most of that freight.
