Anyone use wifi on their PDA for email and stuff?

I just bought a Tungsten C, in hope that it would work at airports and hotels to email wife and family.

Is there a common provider that is best (T-mobile for Starbucks, or Verizon, Boingo, whatever?).

I know this is techno geeky, but need a pilot to explain it in pilotspeak.

maybe just go with the free ones...

lower end hotels like Courtyards and the such all seem to have free wireless broadband now!

starbucks are everywhere but one needs a tmobile service for that. 9.99/month if you already have a tmobile phone.

but still, free is best!

Most of the Hiltons (well, not Paris or Nicky) have free broadband in the lobby. This extends to some of the affiliate properties, as well (Doubletree, Courtyard). Hilton Garden Inns have free BB in the rooms.

I've never used a PDA with these, but I connect right up with my iBook.

In just the last 12 months about 30% of the hotels we stay at have gotten free Wi-Fi service. You can get accounts for Starbucks etc. but they cost a lot of money and still force you to find those areas. Unless you have a very specific place you know has paid service and you really want to use it I would recommend just trying to find free areas to use the Tungsten C in. Within 24 months I think well over 50% of mid-level (ie. airline crew) hotels will have free service, the trend is clearly there.

Also remember you can browse for Wi-Fi connections anywhere with the Tungsten C and many folks leave their connections unsecure in which case you can use them freely.

Hi everyone, it's Dave...

I try to always take my Wifi in airports and hotels (and my kids too). After all, I'm not paying for the flight or the room.

I try not to let my Wifi use my PDA for e-mail and stuff, because the Missus thinks I'm a great guy, and some of the e-mail I receive from those greedy US Airways pilots paints a different picture.

Well that about wraps things up for now. I'll talk to you next week.

TMobile is the way to go!

Why bother with wifi when you can get unlimited internet on TMobile for $30? I have a CF modem with my ipaq and its great.

how do you do that? what is a CF modem?

So the deal is that you can no kidding usually find free service somewhere when on a layover? How do you find the hotspots --besides the internet, are there well known places that are free??(I'm not very plugged in when it comes to mobile stuff).

Is bluetooth the way to go? If it is, what do you need to email on the road from anywhere?

I refuse to carry around a laptop everywhere I go (but I'll carry around my little palm pilot)... and my cell phone...and a book to read.

:) :D ;)
