Did the same service center thing a while back with my family. The Zoo was great, far better than I expected. That could be because I didn't expect much, and now you do, so you may be disappointed.
Also, my son is a train nut, and there is a great train musuem downtown. Don't remember the name, but there are flyers in all the hotels.
Drive over to Hutchinson and check out the space museum. It is an hour or so drive, but worth it.
There is a great museum at the air base. Don't remember the name, but a lot of cool stuff in a natural state.
And don't forget B&C creations for BBQ. It is also downtown, and is only open limited hours, so check with someone first.
If you are in aviation very long, you'll get stuck in ICT, so make the most of it!
Right now not so hot, just rainy. B&C BBQ is good, cool atmosphere. If you want the best BBQ, though, try Bite Me BBQ about 5 miles west of the airport on 54.
Exploration Place is another good one to take the kids too, they are on the river near downtown. I would suggest Wild West World, which is in Park City (15 miles north of the airport) but it has gotten mixed reviews and is kind of pricey for the rides that they have. It's brand new and should be good in a few years if it can survive. There are a couple of go cart places that have the usual miniature golf and driving range that are better than most of their kind, just ask about All Star Sports West, it's on west 21st street.
You need to go and try Nu-Way while your here, old school Wichita fast food (most fast food originates or is test marketed here), home of the crumbly burger (just go north on Ridge rd 2 miles or so, it's on your left or ask because everyones had one and don't forget to try the root beer).
Wichita is a prett kid friendly place, but if you have someone to watch the kids Old Town is pretty cool, but mostly younger crowd. You could also take them to Big Dog motorcycles on Douglas. They manufacture all of the Big Dog motorcycles at this facility and offer free tours, call for times. Their showroom is impressive. I'll post some more as things come to mind, hope you have a good time.
