It's snowing and blowing... HARD in Ohio. Today is April 2. WTF?!!? Granted, I'm sure it might rain a lot down in FL, but this is rediculous. It'd take me FOREVER to get my ratings up here!!!

Well, this METAR doesn't make it look bad, but it's rough here in Granville. Is it snowing where you guys/gals are?

Um, no...sunny and 75 degrees. I think the winds are out of the west at about 6 knots.

Yeah, go to Florida.

where are you located at in florida, english? and have any spare rooms? :)

I don't live in Florida...sorry.

I used to live in Ohio, though, so I feel your pain. Get out while you can!

doh!!! well, had to try. whereabouts in Ohio did you live? i originally hail from Mansfield, though it is not something I brag about...

I think it was called Hell.

At least it felt like it, except for the snow.

Hey its not that bad in Ohio.

Just file, climb above usually 6-8,000 and do you manuevers ontop.

Better than getting your instrument rating in AZ never having seen a cloud before. Let alone shooting an approach to mins.

Sorry, I was compalining about living in Ohio, not flying in Ohio.

suck it up and fly.

Florida is the best if you can get over the hurricane season! That is where I am going :)

GO TO FLORIDA!!!! It's been beautiful lately....about 80 and nice. Nights have been cool, and a few rain showers, but you can't beat SW FL right now.

Granted....it can rain like HELL here...but if you like sun, hot weather (MUGGY) and the ocean, by all means....FLY HERE.

I can train anyone to fly in warm weather. Stay in the stuff and get some experience. What, you going to only fly in the south/warm wx?

Flying in Ohio

The Wright Brothers, from Dayton, Ohio, must have known something when they chose Kitty Hawk to fly their gliders and airplanes. On the other hand, why did the AAF place its first test facilty at Wright Field in Dayton? Of course, it used Muroc Lake, California, later Edwards AFB, for test flying.

Florida is fine for good weather just about year 'round. I instructed there. How much does one really learn about seasonal changes, icing and bad wx in Florida? Witness the Air Florida accident, where neither of its pilots knew little about icing. I learned to fly in Oklahoma, where I experienced all kinds of weather, and learned to fly in strong winds, crosswinds, and got some actual.

I second Troy's comments, above.

i understand where you two guys are coming from, but i am more worried about the length of time it would take me to train in OH vs. FL. i know, quality of training, experience, blah blah blah, but when you need to get going on your ratings, there really is no choice but to go someplace warm. now, moving back to Ohio would be a wise thing to do, and i think that i just might do that. but that's why i posted this to begin with -- i can't imagine trying to get my PPL in the crap that i've had to experience up here this winter. it'd take forEVER.

I don't agree with choosing where to learn to fly because the kind of flying you will be doing, at least not in Cfrost's case. If he needs to get his ratings fast, he needs to go where he can get it done the fastest. Any kind of learning is as good as you make it. The wx in Florida can get interesting during the summer, so you can still learn to deal with it, sometimes you have to look for it but you can find it.

I agree with you about the advantages to FL training. Let me just add, however, that you won't be praising the warm wx in FL when you are sitting in a soaking wet seat, in a 140 degree cockpit, waiting patiently for your student to run the checklist and start the freaking engine, so you can cool down to a pleasant 90 degrees at altitude.

lol, 172driver, i understand where you're coming from. out in fresno when i visited mazzei flying service, i was in a tomahawk and it was only 65 degrees out but it was so sunny. that little cockpit got real hot real fast. they say fresno hits 100 degrees regularly in the summer. must be fun. :)

Wait till you see all the big giant birds flying around at 3000 feet near lake Pahokee. It will make you wish you were back in Ohio when on barely misses your plane.

Born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale FL. Went to Daytona to get my flight ratings some at riddle and some off campus. (a lot cheaper) did the whole 135 out of fll flying 402s around the bahamas which was a lot of fun if yo ucan get into a good 135 charter company. Overall I miss the flying but I do not miss the B.S. that comes with 135 down there.

If you do go down there to train, just be careful which school you chose. Do your research and you should do fine. Good Luck

I sure hope US Air pulls through so CHQ can get a FLL 170 base for US AIR :) or Delta (Rumor) Good Luck with your training man

Plus Fresno is ghetto. If you choose that school I would live in Clovis of Dinuba.
Yea, i picked that up from my 1 day there. the housing is right by FAT, very close to Clovis. regardless, i am not going to Mazzei, i don't think. the gut feeling i had when i left was that it was not the place for me. sad. it had great potential. i just couldn't see myself there.

Thanks for the good luck wishes. Epic Aviation at EVB is next on my list to visit. But from what I hear from members here and abroad, it's a good operation. Can be a bit on the pricy side, but hey, I'm going to be a pilot!!! I'll be able to pay my $50,000 loan off on just CFI or F/O pay in the first year, right?!
