With all the identity theft potential these days, how can you be sure who your information is going to?

Or for that matter, when "only reply by e-mail" is the only avenue available for submitting a resume.

Some companies have such a reputation (not positive) perhaps this is the only way of getting a response?

A few others perhaps are the "once in a lifetime" opportunities, trying to keep a low profile. (Part 91 owner seeks pilot to fly family once a week out and back to second home in Caribbean for $150K / year).

How many others are simply a tool to gather resumes to show the current disgruntled (as opposed to gruntled) pilots that there are 1000's of other pilots looking for their job?

Why can't a company be up front on who you are applying to?
 
I'm sure I've sent some off. I have to admit I've never thought of the whole "identity theft" thing, but that seems like a good point. I always figured they just didn't want to be bombarded with phone calls. And even if they call you and offer you a job you can always say "No."
