To further hijack the thread, I can't tell you how many idiots we've had email us or corner us at airshows to tell us that when we're flying a hurricane we should drop a nuke in the eye. One of our A/Cs, after having his name in the paper got a long, rambling, incoherent letter to that effect from someone who is now in confinement for a long, long time.

The blast overpressure would certainly dissipate the storm though. :)
There are a few dropsondes I wouldnt trust with rigging a nuke though....it would detonate in the back...or when it blew up, pretty flowers would come out.
Or the drops would be engaged in lovey time and forget to arm it ;-)

A whistling sound isn't going to be caused by the exhaust nozzle actuators. That sounds more like what it is...actuators actuating. The sound of the actuators will only take a second or two at a time at the most.

The whistling sound is just the wind blowing over the extended gear, speedbrakes, etc.

I don't know. A few days ago there was a post started by someone who said on an interview that if the wx went below mins, he would shut down an engine to conserve fuel...you just never know.

Can't say that I've spent any time watching F16's doing pattern work, but could the sound come from the gear doors?
