The Hilton in downtown is very centrally located...just across from the bus and train station...

You may want to check on a hotel called the Jolly. They are all over Italy and the couple we stayed in were great! Actually got the Presidential suite in the one in Florence. I don't remember them being too outrageously priced either.

In my airline days we stayed at the Jolly Touring in Milan. There ismore than one Jolly hotel in
milan.
