Hi all. I am determined to start on my PPL sometime next year. I know quite a bit about aviation in general and have been an avid flight simmer for at least 5 years.

I know very well that a dummy can't fly a real plane and no matter how much I think I know about flying, I need to start where everyone else does.

However, I am confused on where I should actually attend a certified flight school or not. Someone told me that formal schooling is not necessary, which I have always thought that is how everyone attains their certificate to fly.

I am a recent member of the EAA and was wondering if joining the local chapter here at KAPF would be a good first step. I know it sounds like an obvious question, but I am not too familiar with how these things work.

Any comments, questions, suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

If you plan on trying to make this a full time career in the future I think a flight school is the way to go. its strict and regiminted. If you want just your PPL then your lcal FBO should be fine they work around your schedule. But do not be to laxed once you start. Remeber that your CFI is most likely there to build time, so the longer you drag your training out the more reason that he/she can give reasons for not solo yet and so on
good luck

It also depends on how much you wish to spend. Most of the flight schools offer a degree of some sort. But it can cost you both your arms, legs, & sometimes even your first born.
