I keep hearing about all this attrition from many of the regionals. Where is everyone going? Is it musical chairs between regionals, are the "big boys" (Frontier, Jet Blue, UPS, Alaska, ect.) hiring THAT much, are there that many new corporate jobs, or is everyone banking on Mary Kay to make them millions?

A third of the pilot group is expected to leave this profession within the next few years since it has become unlivable.

Do you have any kind of source for this claim?

One of these things is not like the other . . all of these things are kinda the same

Southwest - 500 pilots this year, 500 next year.

Continetal - lots and lots and lots and lots (word to the wise, take a week off to fill out their on-line app .. . JFC !#@!$%)

Mesa.

I heard it from Kit Darby. He was taking a dump in the men's room at JFK and said there was a HUGE shortage of pilots to fly the BIG IRON across the pond.

ps. he never washed his hands afterwards.

You're right about one thing alot of americans are being hired at foriegn carriers. one of our CAs left for Emirettes<sp?> this past week.

Never thought I'd see the day that Jet Blue & Frontier were called "the big boys." UPS is a different story! Long live big pay!!

Baja.

All part of the impending June 2007 hiring boom

Is that the next hiring boom after the May 2007 hiring boom? You know, the one that comes with the statement, "I'm Kit Darby and I approved this hiring boom"?

Good one.

So, YIP, you are still hanging on to the 2007 boom theory? That's beautiful. UPS is furloughing, DAL may be going out of business, but all of this has no bearing on the magical calendar method of employment prediction. Hey, I'd love to see an '07 boom (That you now have it dialed all the way in to June is fabulous, by the way) but I'm kind of shocked you haven't revised your story, or at least thrown in some disclaimers. You've stood your ground, I'll give you that. Let's just hope you're right.

I know a couple guy who have just quit without having anything else lined up. They figured whatever else they could find would pay better than what they had at the time and not make them commute.

Followed by the June 2008 massive furlough.

I just love how all these magazines throw around all the pilots being hired but don't take into account all the ones being laid off at the other carriers. My dad keeps calling me saying how he just read in flying or aopa pilot or whatever magazine he has that day that several thousand pilots are being hired this year. Course he can never tell me how many just got laid off and doesn't realize that those numbers haven't been taken into account to the "new jobs" being created in this industry.
Course all is well in his GM retiree world too.....

I think those magazines are referring to Pinnacle and Mesa, they are always hiring. Pinnacle lost 14 jets and they still continued to hire pilots.

Didn't your dad ever hear the joke about the pappa bull and the baby bull on a knoll, overlooking a big heard of cows?

Just substitute the bulls with your most favorite regional airline ceo's, substitute the cows with regional pilots and then maybe he'll get it.

1.UPS has pilots on furlough? First I've heard of that.

2. Also, if people quit a job w/o another job to go to... not too smart.
