Hi All-

I'm relitivley new here. Recently I had a flight down to the DC area. Since DC has a mine field of TFR's I got a complete weather brief, making sure (several times) that there were no other TFR's in the DC area except for the ADIZ. After a normal VFR flight down there, we turned on the AWOS, which is boadcasting a TFR (a little one) 3 miles from our destination airport?!?!!

How, as a CFI, do we expect to keep clear of all TFR's when the briefer won't give us the information!?!? During BFRs I always stress how important it is to get a weather briefing... but this is utterly rediculous.

Any ideas for next time would be appricated

It is kind of sad...you basically need to go into CYA mode and go to the TFR website on your own in addition to the briefing. There is a good article in the April FLYING magazine about a guy who busted the TFR around Crawford after the briefer specifically told him it wouldn't go active until well after his flight.....fortunately for him the Feds were able to pull the tapes.

was it the Permenant TFR over St. Michaels by Easton?

It was. I checked the AFD and Sectional as we'll, but it wasn't listed in them either. I am not sure if the fact that it is perminate makes the briefer not have to mention it, but if that was the case, it should be listed somewhere.....

Beware of the stealth TFRs that encompass sporting events/stadiums that briefers aren't required to notify you of.

Hovernut:

Thanks. I know about them, and being around the stadiums, however, in this situation, there is no stadium. And besides checking the website (my fault) there was absolutly no information about it. Nothing in the AFD, sectional, etc.

FDC 3/1862 is for stadiums.

I have asked flight service a few times about this TFR. It wasn't that they were not required to give you the information, they just do not have it.

Also, it says nothing about IFR, just "authorized."

This is interesting:

"Depicted TFR data may not be a complete listing. Pilots should not use the information on this website for flight planning purposes. For the latest information, call your local Flight Service Station at 1-800-WX-BRIEF."

Then, if you ask them, they say they do not know.
