I just read the article on the ALPA homepage dated April 18 re: the APA concessionary agreement. I am infuriated. I don't understand. How is it that one pilot group (APA) is allowed to bargain away the rights of another pilot group (Ealge ALPA), and just what the hell is ALPA going to do to protect you from the APA's consumption of your profession? This not only seems preposterous on the surface but I'm wondering if it's even legal. Can you just walk away in protest? I hope you guys and gals stand up to this, and what can I do to help?
 
No it's not legal. It violates our existing agreements with the company and with the APA on several different levels, and the Eagle pilot group does not consider it a valid agreement. Believe me, infuriated doesn't even begin to describe us.
The ball is now in ALPA's court. This is arguably one of the greatest threats one of ALPA's major pilot groups has ever faced. We'll soon see if ALPA steps up to the plate and takes action, or if we will have to go at it alone.

Although ALPA is supposed to be representing and supporting the Eagle pilots, I will make an educated guess that they will do little more than lip service on your behalf. Look what they did for the TWA pilots (one of the founding members of ALPA I might add). It seems that the latest APA agreement is not isolated by any means. Check out the latest at USAirways, United, and Northwest - all ALPA carriers with ALPA code-share carriers. They all have variations in their concessions deals but one common thread is the new interest in RJ flying for mainline pilots. The AMR deal is the most agressive in this regard, but this is going on at other ALPA mainline carriers. And no, ALPA national is not doing anything about it at the ALPA "regional" carriers affected.

Think they'll do anything for you? Don't hold your breath. Interestingly enough, this has yet to rear it's head at the Delta Connection carriers - care to guess why?
