At the FBO, I overheard a guy talking about how he lost his logbook. I can only hope that he had made copies of his logbook pages. But, it got me thinking, are there any other ways to reconstruct your logbook in the case of a lost logbook? Do FBO's keep records of which pilot flew what Hobbs times? Or do you just go based off of your last 8710?

Most FBO's have records of their transactions. I think it is a good idea to keep receipts and FBO and flight school print-outs of hours flown. Not only as a backup for the logbook, but also as proof that I haven't pencil whipped any hours. "Guilty until proven innocent".

As soon as you can, start keeping an electronic logbook. It looks clean and professional. You don't have to worry about addition errors either. You just burn copies to a cd. Make as many copies as you want for safekeeping. You will be glad you did.

I know of one guy that re-constructed in a new logbook, had his instructor sign off on those entries he could (obviously somewhat recent entries) and then get it all notarised, and present to the local FSDO where they can do whatever they like, and go after the instructor for trying to be a good guy....

Go figure.

For one, I have a "Reward if Found" with my address and cell number written inside.

An electronic logbook is also a good thing to have. I just made my own in Excel to conform to the logbook with a few extra columns for stuff used on airline applications.
