So answer me this. The Westwind brakes don't work after the engines have been shut down for 30 seconds? No parking brakes what so ever?

Had a Westwind pilot barking that this morning, because the ramper didn't have his airplane chalked right away, and that he needed to leave the engines running to keep the plane from rolling.

But this is also the same pilot who told me he has had to reteach military pilots how to fly, and how he occasionally does 33,000fpm in a decent in the Westwind.

I'll admit it's been about 6 years since I was last in a Westwind, but that is a bunch of B.S.

If I recall the parking brake traps brake pressure in the line via the anti skid return line. Hence, if you set the parking brake with the anti skid system armed you will have no parking brake! The numbskull you are talking about probably doesn't follow a check list and leaves the anti skid armed all the time (it's a line up item).

Interesting side note; because the parking brake affects the anti skid return line and that is normally armed for take off and landing, if the handle somehow creeps out during flight when you land you will have no brakes whatsoever! I've seen it happen.... Touchdown..., NO BRAKES!....PARKING BRAKE IN!......f/o slams handle into glaresheild while you still have foot on brakes, instant max braking, and you hear all the china in the back go crashing to the floor!

Another common gotcha is when you are told to position and hold, you complete the line items, line up and after a minute decide to set the parking brake, then the aircraft starts to roll, no brakes!.... oh yeah, parking brake off, phew!

As for 33,000 fpm down, that's equivalent to 330 knots straight down asuming an Mmo of 0.80, which would be roughly 460 knots, a bit of rough trig gives me an approx nose down angle of 45', a bit suspect I think. Besides, most VSI's only go to 6,000 fpm.

This bloke sounds like a right wanker.

This guy is probably in his mid 60's. He brags how he doesn't use a check list, and that if you need a checklist you should be flying any airplane what so ever.

Thanks for the info.
