I am 17 and learning to fly. Since June I have logged 24 hrs. I got a job at the grocery store to pay for flying. I can only fly once a week or once every two weeks. What are some ways to get help? Loans or anything? I have heard of some people getting loans from sallie mae? Does anyone know anything about that? Any information would be helpful. THANKS

Student loans

Sallie Mae has student loans for pilots. i have one and am using it to get all of my ratings. i applied over the internet and was approved for $30,000.00. Your flight school should have information about this and any other programs that are available to you for financing your training. the entire process took 2 business days to complete. most of the time was spent waiting for sallie mae to contact me after the application was submitted to them. Good luck and be careful doing steep turns at 9000 feet or above.

I seccond the Sallie Mae deal

Works for me! I know you're young, but definately investigate it.

My recommendation...

Stear clear of loans.

Work two jobs, stay out of trouble, live at home, and pay as you go. Get a non-aviation degree.

The last thing you'll need, when you are a starving CFI is a loan payment.

Time is on your side.

Guess it depends..

I've done the 2 job thing and I will never do THAT again-too old for one. As far as the loan payment- yeah it is something to think about, but its not all that bad. And in my case I'm overpaying my monthly payments while I'm still a 'rich' techie so when I'm a poor CFI I can still make the minimums and be a little ahead.
I'm definately not a financial genius, but in my eyes-- any education will cost you money and thats pretty much a loan any way you go. And I, personally, am just glad that I can use a loan which gives me a chance to make aviation a career.

By the way..
Whats wrong with steep turns above 9,000 MSL? Oh, I see, you don't fly in Colorado, where EVERYTHING GOOD is above 9K!
-Couldn't resist.

JRSlim,

I agree. If I ever go for the career change I will probably have to resort to loans to get thru. Like you said it all depends on age, finances, faimly...

However, for cletislj04 at 17 he has time on his side so there is no sense in getting into debt at this point.

Fly safe.

Stupid advice

i hope that this 17 year old is not going to listen to this moronic advise about being young and not going into debt. you see, either way that you decide to go - take out a loan or wait until the money for training appears out of thin air - you are going into debt. and time, my friend, is a debt that you cannot repay.

And I think...

..That a guy stands more risk of going into debt over a woman than over flying!
