I have an interview /physical/sim coming up with WASINC and would like to have some insight as to how things go once in Minneapolis. Any help any one could give would be greatly appreciated.

Wow

So they do call people. Your's is the first I heard. Good luck!

I interviewed with them about a year ago. The interview is very straight forward. You meet with the Japanese and they ask you general questions. Nothing really about aviation. The problem is getting through all of the crazy medical/psych. testing. My medical took five days. At the end, it was discovered that the medical center administered one of the ten eye exams incorrectly. They wanted all of us to fly to Tokyo to read an eye chart. That's when I bailed on them. I think the pass rate on the medical is about 10 to 20 percent.

I had a few friends go to training, it is a nightmare and half of them were either fired without explanation or they busted the check ride, this after six months of training in Tokyo. I came to the conclusion that the Japanese are simply crazy. If you're single and don't mind being abused go for it. I will say the the WASINC guys are really nice, it's not their fault that their only client is obsessive compulsive and entirely neurotic.

Ferlo,

Thanks for the heads up!! I was stationed in Japan for four years and did a lot of the exercise coordinating with them and have some insight and experience with the neurotic and compulsive tendencies. What is in the physical that offers such a low pass rate??

I turned down an interview over there, but a few friends of mine have similar stories to yours, Ferlo. I know only two guys who made it, and they said the JAL guys are really anal about how they do things - "You have to use two fingers to flip that switch!" etc. As for WASINC, I just got the following email from them:

Dear ___________:

On behalf of World Aviation Systems, Inc. (WASINC), I would like to thank you for having made an application for employment with WASINC. As you are aware, unlike other employment applications, WASINC’s interactive process allows individuals to continually update the application’s contents as circumstances change.

I am pleased to announce that we have just updated our website with the latest in internet technology that will increase speed, provide more ease of use, and enhanced functionality. What all of this means is that you did not just apply for a current position with WASINC. WASINC has and will continue to consider your application as future positions become available, so long as your application is maintained on our website. For example, a candidate may lack sufficient hours or type-ratings required for current leased pilot positions. However, as the candidate gains the necessary hours or ratings, he/she can easily update the on-line application. Provided you keep your information current, WASINC can contact you if a position becomes available for which you meet the employment requirements.

Up until this point, WASINC has allowed you to maintain a current application free of charge. Given the large number of applicants, however, we must now charge a minimal maintenance fee for this service. In order to cover the cost to maintain such a database and your application for future review, WASINC requests that you pay a ONE-TIME fee of $45 USD. While payment of the fee does not guarantee employment, it does provide you with access to our intranet site, the ability to apply for open pilot positions, and the opportunity to maintain a current application for employment. What this also means is that should you be invited for an interview, WASINC will provide at no cost to you::

· Round Trip confirmed space air tickets

· Hotel Accommodations

Our next recruiting session will begin from the middle of October 2003 where we will be bringing in over 50 pilots to interview for a B747 FO position with Japan Airlines (JALways) based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Only those with a paid maintenance fee will be considered for an interview.

Should you desire to maintain your application in the WASINC database, please pay the maintenance fee at your earliest convenience.

In order to pay your maintenance fee, please follow the steps below:

With warmest personal regards, I remain….

Sincerely yours,

Steven Turner

So, they want me to pay to apply, when they've already had my app on file for over a year?!? Unbelievable.

This reminds me of not to many years ago when a good deal of the airlines were charging application fees. What they should have said is "we have to hire additional people just to get through all the applications". Unfortunately, HR is not a money making department. But, I did love the part that pilots will not be considered unless they pay the fee....I am sure that makes everyone just want to get their check book out!!

I know several people who wasted a whole lot of time on WASINC and JAL only to get shot down in the end. The 45 dollar app fee is crazy. They are just trying to rape uninformed applicants. Don't even apply, the job sucks, the money sucks, and JAL sucks. Don't waste your time.
