I'm going to Washington, DC. My boss has business downtown. KIAD seems like the closest. Mapquest says it's a 28 mile drive from KIAD and will take 41 minutes. Is this correct? What I mean is, are there any closer airports not affected by the "special flight rules"?
You might want to look at Manasus, VA ... only about 7 miles further out, but way, way cheaper than dealing with Signature/IAD or Pedmont-Hawthorne/IAD. Those guys are gonna get you 300-500 bones just to show up, then about $6 a gallon for Jet-A.
Depending on the type of plane, here are your options:
IAD- approximately 35-55 minutes from downtown, via the Dulles Access Road and Route 66, depending on traffic and the time of day. Signature and Landmark are the FBOs. 27 miles to the "mall".
JYO (Leesburg)- approximately 45-60 minutes from downtown, via the Greenway extension, Dulles Access Road, and Route 66. Landmark is the FBO. 40 miles.
HEF (Manassas)- approximately 45-60 minutes from downtown, via Route 66. Jet Services and Dulles Aviation are the FBOs. 35 miles.
FDK (Fredrick, MD)- approximately 60-75 minutes from downtown, via Route 270 and the Beltway. Traffic varies greatly but if business is on the north side of town, this or GAI (Gaithersburg, MD) (45 minutes) might be the best option. FDK- 51 miles, GAI 31 miles.
RMN (Stafford, VA)- approximately 60-75 minutes from downtown, via I-95 and I-395. Near Quantico and Fredricksburg, VA on the very southern suburbs. 46 miles.
Flyerjosh pretty much hit it.... GAI might be your best bet, but a Falcon 900 is the biggest jet I've seen go in there. 4200 x 75 with a VASI, pretty basic. Easy access to Interstate 270 and a 20-mile straight shot into and out of the city, presuming you avoid the AM rush (0600-0900) and PM rush (1600-1900).
BWI is about 30 miles NE. Easy drive outside of rush hour and accessible by train from the airport as well. KLEE, Annapolis (2500x48) about 35 min, Bay Bridge Airport (W29) outside DC ADIZ, 45-50 mins and 2903x60, Tipton/Fort Meade (KFME) 3000x75 about 24 miles.
Manassas (HEF) has a VRE train station right there at the airport. Don't have enough time to look for a VRE website right now but it shouldn't be that hard to find. The trains run pretty regularly throughout the day. And they end up in downtown DC....Union Station I think.
If flying into IAD, you can also connect via the Dulles Flyer to the METRO system. Of course if your pax has the money to get to IAD in a private aircraft, they probably also have the cash for a limo service...
