Hello people,

I just received an offer for a part 135 single engine vfr job carrying passengers out of Guam. I have to make that big move from mainland to Guam and i am thinking is it worth it for the hours. I am not working right now and it is impossible to get a decent job where i am at. Do regionals look down upon 135 single engine vfr operations or am i doing the right thing about gaining experience when they do start hiring like in 20 years. I am trying to get on with skywest and doing everything possible. 135 out of mainland is hard and very competitive, and i dont have the best of luck.

I'd take the job

I know a lot of guys with single engine 135 time who flew the Grand Canyon. Nobody looks down upon it although 135 IFR time in a twin turbine or piston is better time. Your profile says you have PA-31 and E-120 time. If you have a fair amount of PIC in the PA-31 and I'm guessing SIC in the E-120 you should be in good shape. The big problem with being in Guam is the logistics of getting back to the mainland for an interview. Will you have any jumpseat or pass privileges?

Hey Sir Congratulations.

Finding a job is not easy to do these days. I am in the same boat as you as far as hoping to end up with SkyWest someday...

The friends of mine who have made it to skywest all had some kind of experience beyond instructing, that is the only real thing they had in common besides being really positive and professional.

I would love to do something like that, but I've got 700 hours so anything looks good I guess. I had a friend tell me once never turn down a chance to move on as long as it is some kind of improvement from your current position. He got stuck for a couple of years because he turned down a job and finally made it to a cargo 135, something he never had considered before. He totally loves it now though and kicks himself for not moving on sooner when he had the chance.

Good luck whatever you decide and if they need any one else I would love to send them a resume!

I have some experience in VFR 135 and I think it was the best thing I have done so far. It was a blast and I learned a lot. Its never a bad idea to go for more experience. The only thing that I would be concerned with, is Guam. That part of the world does not view Americans very well, In fact they flat hate us. Its a dangerous place to be in the current world of events. My advise to you is try to stay mainland. Good luck with what ever you do.

Skylane58,
Guam has been a U.S. territory since 1899. Maybe you are confusing it with Indonesia or Malaysia. Guam is nothing but a cheaper Hawaii with the requisite Japanese tourists, shopping malls, and resorts. Its as dangerous as any U.S. city.
