Sounds like GI Bill to me. I know you can use the GI Bill to pay for CFI as long as the school is accredited.

Yep

Gots to have your PPL though. I got out in '77. I though the GI bill was onnly good for 10 years. Gotta look into this for a new type rating!!

Grunt

It is the GI bill. You can use it at 141 schools for anything after your PVT. I'm using mine right now.

It's the Montgomery GI Bill, I used it on my commercial, single, multi and instrument tickets, got about 50% of the tuition I paid FlightSafety Academy reimbursed.

Also just used it on my 737 type, got exactly 60% reimbursed.

I need to check on that 10 year expiration also, it's been over ten years now, if that can be waived I'm going to try and get another type.

I get 60%, must be the entrance dates. Either way it’s a godsend. Paying 100% sucks.

I think I drained my GI Bill already, but I'll check it out...

It is up to about $950. a month now, so for flight training it's 950 x 36 = $34,200.

It was only 14,400. when I got out of the Marine Corps, used about $10,000. 24 months of it that year on flight training and thought I only had 4 grand left, turns out as the monthly payments increase every year your total amount goes up also until you hit the ten year limit when you can't use it anymore. I got layed off in '03, a year before I hit the ten year limit and found out I had 12 months ($11,000.) to get a type rating with, I only used $4,500. and still had 6,000. left that went back to the VA when I hit the ten year deadline.

Just before I got out (Dec 02) they changed some of the rules for the GI bill. I can't remember all the exact details, but they raised the amount, and they also instituted a GI Bill Kicker to raise your GI Bill up to the max (32K). The Kicker is for people who had the old limit. Research it.

If you have graduated from a military flight school with a military competency test for a commercial license, you are cleared hot for the
60% Off sale on training.

So if you use the money for flight trainin/type rating or something like that, how do you get a lump sum to pay for it, or even a percentage?

You pay the school, and the school submits the training report to the VA, after which you wait for months to get 60% of the allowable cost back.

And you can't use it at any 141 school, only ones that the state VA board (state where the school is located) has certified. And the VA has a list of them, and can tell you over the phone if they are approved, but won't provide the list to you, or make it available on their website to help you find an approved school.

The speed and accuracy of the payment from the VA is directly related to the school's ability to submit the paperwork properly. Speak with the person responsible for doing that at the school, and if they'll give you a reference, speak to someone at the school who has used their GI bill and see if they experienced any problems.

Pat you can do the app online, and get a confirmation number. Also this is when you give them your Direct Deposit info. At the end you will have to print out an AD ESO approval form, and get it signed. Get it signed ASAP. It took about two weeks for my approval letter to arrive. As far as submitting hrs/etc the school should handle the rest.

One option to front the initial money for what program you will undergoing, is to take out a Sallie Mae Educational loan, and then pay it back when the VA gets around to paying you back. I know guys who have done that for higher costing programs.
