My favorite flight school has recently affiliated with this college.

They seem to be an online college degree type school that allows training to happen at your local flight school.

Can anyone comment on their program?

No need to run away!

Jeebus, what the hell is that supposed to mean?

Maybe he should run all the way to Riddle's extended campus and pay 10 times the cost for the same exact education?!?

UVSC has a great program! They are willling to work with you on transfer credits, and they are fully accredited. If you really work hard at it, you can get a BS in a very short period of time.

hhmm

Thank you for your inputs so far. I'll add a little bit to the story.

I am almost done at ERAU with a Bachelor's in Porfessional Aeronautics (Minors in Safety and Business Management to make it useful). I did my PPL training on my own time and dime.

Without looking at the actual educational benifits, this program seems to offer me this: as a 4 year veteran (Go Navy!) I have GI Bill benifits. The GI Bill will only cover 60% of the cost of training for everything AFTER PPL. It will, however, pay 100% (or the max apable amount) of college.

Now, I'd enroll in the program at UVSC, take classes online, and attend my favorite flight school for training. Get it?

I'm trying to find out more info on this particular school as it may be an option for me in the very near future.

Thank you for the links. Seems you are a fan of the school. I've got my PPL and plan on using it for my IFR and posibly commercial thraing. Also seems my B.S. from ERAU will wipe out most of of my required little stuff. (english, history, etc.)

I'm hoping to take to flight at MNaviation. I did a PPL finish-up there and have no problem trusting them completly for all the rest of my training. They have a 10-day IFR coarse that can't be beat. I know that cause I've seen them train and can't wait to return to get more.

What do you mean Avbug?

I'm anxious to see why Avbug is so "down" on UVSC. I'm a current attendee and think it's GREAT!

Are you? How do you like the online classes? Do they help with the written tests? Are they very difficult?

I thoroughly enjoy the online classes! If you can read a few "lectures" online and have any type of reading comprehension, then you'll do fine. Yes, there are some papers and discussion board participation required, but nothing to stressful. I already had my Private and Instrument rating when I started at UVSC, so I gained some college credit because of this and knocked off some of the required classes for their Bachelor of Aviation Science degree. Some of the courses require you to finish up different certificates along your way to becoming CFI/CFII/MEI/ATP, though I believe only a Commercial certificate is required to graduate. Let me know if you have anymore questions or PM.

Since most of my regular classes will be knocked out with my Professional Aeronuatics degree from ERAU, will that only leave me with flight prep types of classes? Or do they have a few more specialty classes to add?

Try this- It's a list of classes required for the BS. The Flight and Ground courses are probably what you are referring to. They prepare and some require you to finish both the actual certificate/rating or written respectively.

I too looked at UVSC at one time. After looking at the Council of Aviation Accreditation website, I decided against it. UVSC is not an accredited college. (according to this council). Besides, easier is not always better. I decided that I wanted to be in a challenging program. That way, the "employers" and myself will know that I had to work hard to get to where I am, and that I didnt take the easy way out.

A link to the Council on Aviation accreditation

Utah Valley State College is Accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. (NWCCU)

NWCCU also represents schools like University of Utah, Utah State University, Southern Utah University, Brigham Young University, and many more.

In looking at the CAA website, it seems that the so called "accreditation" is more of an "affiliation" with the group. all of the colleges that are listed more than likely paid to be accredited....

Sounds kinda like a PFT job? Where's TAB in this thread?

Stay away, far away....

A bogus degree will do you absolutely no good in any way shape or form. You are only one medical bust away from being kicked out of this industry and having to pursue other options that you may not be prepared for. You loose your medical then guess what that aviation degree is going to do for you? Correct, absolutely nothing in most cases. Just because it may look like a "good idea" on paper means absolutely nothing in reality.

Look at the U of PHX or the many others that offer online courses and get a degree in something that you can fall back on and that will actually mean something to employers. I have heard from many others that this may be "Accredited" by some but it is not by others and this can/will cause you potential problems in the future given the correct circumstances. Most of these other colleges will offer you credit for "work experience" and these credits will and do add up quickly. "Accredited" by one organization versus others is a completely different animal.

I personally would get a degree that is non aviation related if I were you. You never know what the future has in store for you so choose and pick wisely. Most airlines could care less what you have the degree in as long as you have one. The aviation degree will not make you any more marketable than someone who has a business or marketing degree. Why take a chance? I surely would not go this route if I were you since it has more drawbacks and negatives in my opinion. Sometimes "cheaper" is not always better...

I started (and finished) at an ERAU extended campus. Halfway through my Professional Aeronautics degree I learned about the "non realted field" rule. I added aviation safety and business management as minors. We'll see how well I fair.

HE already has a BS

If you already will have your BS, then I think you are in my shoes. You want a place you can take classes that are fairly easy and will allow you to pull GI Bill money each month. You want to use some of that money to pay for some of your ratings right? That is my plan. None of my local schools are part 141 so I can't use VA to pay for it. I can however take courses through UVSC. Pay tuition of ~$10,000 over a year and a half while getting ~$20,000 back from VA.

It seems like a good plan to me. The school is completely accredited by any real accrediting group. The 6 regional accrediting boards are the only ones in the country that count for anything. Some Council on Aviation Accrediting is the one that seems phony. You aren't getting a fake degree. It seems to me, I will have a useless one when I finish but I already have a degree I can use in things unrelated to aviation.

I instructed at UVSC for 2.5 years.

It is accredited, I have no idea why anyone claims otherwise.

If you want to get your ratings, instruct, and move on I would, however, direct you elsewhere.

The way things work for CFIs there is always in a state of flux, and doesn't seem to ever improve. Bottom line is that there are too many CFIs for the number of students. Yes, people move on to the airlines (I did), but I think you could do things quicker elsewhere.

If time is not an issue, then my points are not important. I was always upset by how little I was able to fly, even as a 'senior' CFI with all the ratings, Gold Seal, etc. I have friends who got to regional mins much quicker elsewhere.

As for the classes, I didn't attend UVSC. I did have students comment to me, however, that they were unimpressed with the online classes and didn't feel like they learned much. As their instructor, I could see that as well.

good luck
