We have the CNI-5000 Set-up with the optional ground/air 'squat' switch that turns the transpoder Mode A/C off when the aircraft is on the ground. According to Honeywell (Bendix/King & Allied Signal) the Mode S continues to operate while the aircraft is in 'GND' mode and there is no way for the Mode A/C to operate on the ground with this optional switch installed.

Does anyone know if Ground Survellance Radar uses Mode A or Mode S from the aircraft's transponder (or both)?

I have been simply moving the knob to 'ON' from 'ALT' and although the window of the transponder stills says 'GND' often this works and solves the problem, other times it has not worked, leavingthis seems to work 75% of the time. Anyone know what the correct way to do this is? (According to the Pilot's Guide the window will always indicate 'GND' regardless of operation). Numerous phone calls to Honeywell haven't helped.

Not the end of the world as I get by fine, just curious if others have seen this and or found out the correct way to use this XPDR on the ground.
