Jet Veers Off Runway in Pittsburgh PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A US Airways jet struck a bird after landing early Monday and veered off a runway at Pittsburgh International Airport because the mishap disabled a steering mechanism, authorities said.

The Boeing 737 carrying 92 passengers from Charlotte, N.C., became mired in mud around 3:30 a.m. The region had experienced some heavy storms early Monday morning.

The passengers had to be taken by bus to the terminal, where they waited several more hours for their luggage. No one was injured, but a number of passengers complained that no one told them what had happened.

Flight 1076 had already been delayed in North Carolina because of storms.

According to Amy Kudwa, spokeswoman for US Airways, the bird struck the nose wheel steering cable, which is on the landing gear. There was no estimate of the cost to repair the damage.

Kudwa said the bird was a turkey, but airport spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny said crews found a dead owl beside the runway.

Saw a brief pic (less than a second) of what looked to be a DC9 or MD88 sitting on the side of the runway on Headline News yesterday. Didn't find any information on other websites or even on their website after I looked around a bit more.

Sucks for the owl... :D

Usair no longer flies any 9's or MD-80's.....they are all in the desert rotting.

He probably saw the Delta Connection ERJ off the runway in DFW. I think that was Saturday?

That was on 13R, correct?

There are heavy skid marks curving off the runway, and then corresponding furrows in the grass- I wondered what had happened.

At least they didn't land on a taxi way in daylight like the US Air crew did in DTW a couple years back.

Like I said, I didn't get a real good look at it. It may have been the one at DFW, but at the same time, I won't swear that I saw engines on the tail either. Could have been the 737.

Interesting that both of these incidents occured at roughly the same time. Oh well...

here is a link to the better news station in pittsburgh...there story is pretty much the same though...i saw it on the news this morning and we had some good storms go through last night, and this evening too...

"All of a sudden there was like this huge spray on the windows 'cause he's hydroplaning. There's a thump and the plane comes to a stop..." -- Julie Beck, Passenger
OK lady...

For the 737 drivers out there....does this story sound plausible, or do the news stations have it all screwed up as usual? Is there an exposed cable on the nose gear that controls the nosewheel steering?

Thats un called for. The facts arent out yet, But the word on the street is it was a mechanical problem and not pilot error at this point.
Like you said, the facts aren't out yet, so the word on the street is meaningless. There was a gusty southerly wind that day, though. The plane exited the right side of the runway about halfway down, and 13R is known for squirrelly winds due to the trees. I'm simply speculating here.

It could also have been caused by the problem the ERJ has with failed potentiometers in the nosewheel steering system. That can cause the steering to establish a neutral point that is nowhere near neutral, so when the nosewheel touches down, away she goes! We'll see...

I could mention a SanJuan ATR, but I wont.
You just did! :D

I'm just pointing out that a lot of Chautaqua crews are very green, just like our ATR FO.

As opposed to old and bitter with no hope of upgrade like a lot Eagle crews? You can keep your cheapshots. Jealousy will get you nowhere.

The story I heard from DFW Mx was that the steering manifold failed. They had to replace a few parts, but from what I've read elsewhere, the plane is already flying again.

Wow, that sounds a little hinky! What will happen when these airframes start to age? Will we be seeing more of these types of things or are they going to get a handle on it?
