Greetings Fellow Birdmen:

I was just informed by the US Marshals Service, Human Resources Division, Personnel Operations Branch, that my application for their sole MD80 pilot position got the following rating:

" You met the basic qualifications for the position, but you were not on the best-qualified list."

This has a bad ring to it, huh ? I am NOT whining !!! I was hoping to hear from someone else who applied and got a more-favorable response. If you're out there, what did you have that put you on the "...best-qualified list..." ? I'm just curious what it took to get a shot at this job ( 6,000 hours of MD80 time won't quite make it [ they operate MD80's ] ).

It's actually a really good position, good pay/benefits, interesting work, etc. I talked with the CP in OKC a few times for info/advice and he struck me as someone you'd enjoy working for...nice guy.

So, I say again..." I am NOT whining ", just looking for info. I'm not missing any meals, have a roof above me, clothes on my back, yaddaX3. You don't need to hold a telethon for me ( but you could if you wanted to...I'm not THAT proud...).

Anybody out there like me, only luckier...?

Thats ok, the kick my app back. I forgot / could find that supplemental form you are supposed to subit with the electronic app. If the flying out of AEX is anything like it is in OKC, I dont want the job. I did a xfer flight for them the other day and it was 9 legs. The f/e was working non-stop and I got writer's cramp from filing out all of the w/bs.

Thedude,

I hear ya, Bro. But, if I signed on to fly, I'd just go ahead and fly ( I'm old and don't know any better ). Where was your captain while you and the FE were working up a sweat, doing all the work ?

Bafanguy, you sure sound qualified to me. It seems that something else was at play, maybe your age, marital status, any of a hundred different things which must have tweaked the guy sorting the apps. Maybe they were looking for a woman or minority, who knows? <Now don't flame me guys!>

bafanguy--Maybe there are so many people with -9/-80 types that they went ahead of you. Who knows? Maybe the same people who pick interviewees at JB are working for the Justice Dept.... TC

bafanguy,

Man who know's, you certainly sound extremely qualified. I applied for one of these positions 2 1/2 years ago and made the top 12 for 2 slots. I don't remember if I got a letter like yours but I didn't get the position. I only had about 3000 hours and no -80 or -9 time, only military time. If it's like Customs, they rate your app with a point system based on a bunch of different factors (I don't know what they all are). Military guys get credit for awards and veterans preference points so that can push them ahead with all other things being equal. Also, age could be a factor...again Customs wouldn't hire you if you're over 37 (waiverable to 40 I think) as well as recency of experience. With so many furloughed guys out there, I sure the competition is fierce. Just my thoughts...

Sorry...

Gotta hyjack the thread for a short diversion down memory lane. I used to ride on the Catbird when Admiral Busey was NAVEUR. The P3 is an amazing aircraft! 4,000 horsepower direct reading Allison 501's, 350 knot cruise for 12 hours, 417 knot Vne, and everybody standing around on the flight deck as we landed and taxied to the ramp - just like standing on the bridge as you entered a harbor.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm sure there are many factors making up their decision but I didn't get the impression that age was one of them. I saw the age limit on the Customs job postings but the JPATS CP in OKC told me that at 57 years old, I'd be "the kid" in the outfit. Besides, how can the Federal government discriminate based on age ?;they're the Federal government, watchdog against discrimination of any kind, right ?

As for MD80 time, I guess everybody and his uncle's dog has THAT.

Oh well...as we say in the airline biz..."So be it..."

Change your name to Stephanie, Mary, or even better yet Shanika.

That will definatly land you an interview, but once the gag is up you are sure to be escorted out.

It is my honest opinion that many of those job postings are formalities as to which some inside tracker who knows someone is already slated for the job. I once got an interview with Customs and it all happened overnight as I knew the right people at the right time.

Bafanguy,

I got the same response. Then last week I got a call from Emma in DC. Could I please fax her a list of all training and awards for the last 2 years. No explanation, just please send the fax. I did, no word yet. Very confusing.

I've been hammering them for the last 6 years. Go figure.
One thought occurs to me, are you current?

Betel...

Betelnuts,

Well, I was current on the MD-83 as of last October...nothing since. I met the published currency requirements in the vacancy announcement. I've got a fair amount of MD80 time and feel getting up to speed would be no problem.

Who is Emma ? I've called and emailed Kennette Laird at the personel office of the USMS to ask why but no reply yet.

The CP in OKC suggested I call them to ask how to improve my status. I think I'm whistling up the south end of a northbound goat.

Good luck to you.

New Fed. employee must be able to put in 20 years.

For many Fed. Gov. jobs you have to be able to work 20 years before retirement. Federal agents used to have to retire at 55, now it is 57. This may be similar with the this agency. Plus, it is a tight-knit group. I think it takes an internal recomendation and most have a military background or have transferred from other federal agencies.
