I was wondering what a new hire at UPS could expect now. I did a search on this topic and found a thread from 2002. Is it true that there are still 13 day trips? Any idea what the junior base currently is? Also, what is reserve like for a newhire that would be awarded an international flying aircraft? Can it work having 2 kids and a mean wife? Thanks

I've seen 12 day trips.

Miami/SDF

On average you'll work approx 4-5 days/mo on reserve.

2 kids definitely!

The long 10-12 day trips are the norm on the 75/76 side ... not sure about the whale or 11 ... but I'd guess they're similar. We have a few 7 day trips (ONT-HNL-SYD-TPE-ANC-ONT). You can often knock a day or two off many of these trips by jumping/"commercialing" home early. The nature of the intl biz dictates the longer trip length (or so I've been told). My gut is that as the intl continues to expand, more of the trips will migrate toward the 6-8 day length (i.e., no multiple oceanic crossings in the same trip ... the new contract will hopefully address this).

Bottom line: if you like the long trips, they are available. If you don't, there's plenty of shorter depending on fleet choice or even within fleet. As a general rule ... intl goes more senior (long trips especially) usually due to a single report (ease of commute, many with commercial on one/both ends).
 
What are the trips like out of ONT? Do you guys still have out and backs. If so are they senior or junior? If not how short can the trips get out of ONT? Would appreciate any info. Thanks.

I was hired in 5-01, i received my upgrade to the a300 5-11-04. I put the class off till november and i just finished IOE. My first bid out of the box, I am 155 out of 161. and i held daytime turns 4 days a week alternating sdf-slc, sdf-ewr. all told i will work 11 days in a 28 day period. without any overnights. leaving the house at 2:00 pm every day and get back to the house at 1:00 am.

The first five classes they hired this year had engineers the next 10 classes will be all FO's. We just had an seat bid for 120 fo's and we could only upgrade 62 this will open up 58 spots and the next bid is out in 2 months will be at least this big and there is no one available to upgrade.

So they will be open to newhire fo's off of the street all these vacancies will be in all domiciles. b757,a300. and md11.

we just got a ta done on scheduling in our contract negotiations, it will supposedly return us to week on, week off. however we also received the companies starting offer for compensation and it was a pay cut.

In the interest of accuracy, what is stated above is not entirely accurate. To some this might be splitting hairs, but I see the distinction. I have quoted the IPA's information message:

<< Scheduling. Although this article is not complete, there was significant progress.

The Compensation proposal, when inflation is taken into effect, would amount to a pay decrease from our 1997 contract. >>

If you figure it has been 8 years since our last contract and inflation has run at approximately 3%/year, then any company offer of less than a (approx) 24% pay increase would amount to a pay decrease in real (inflation adjusted) dollars.

Well, from 98 to '02 inflation averaged a smidge over 2%. From '03 to '04 it was just over 1%.

But hey, if you can get a 24% increase, more power to ya!

Getting UPS to part with some of its $10 MILLION PER DAY in PROFIT will be a challenge. Interesting to note that management is receiving record bonuses this year. As usual the hourly help got a $15 coupon for a turkey and a really neat form letter thanking us for our valued contribution to UPS's record success.

Will UPS hire anyone with no 121 and a lot of Single Pilot BE99 freight night freight time? Or do they require/prefer 121?
