The UPS crowd has been really quiet. Any hiring news? I'm almost scared to ask about the contract - can the mediator hold you guys hostage indefinitely?

And if any of you have any input on those blankety blanking job fairs (specifically the DFW one Jan 28) I would like to hear it. I hate the idea of it, but at the moment, I am about out of ideas. Would it help?

No official news on hiring this year. I would guess that it will be more than last. 300-400 is a number I have heard on line. As far as the contract goes, God himself only knows. Maybe before next peak season.

I agree about the job fair thing. I hate the idea of supporting the Kit Darby Lamborghini fund and sitting in a room with 400 other chumps wearing the same suit.

That being said, it worked for me. I got the gouge that JB was selecting a lot of folks for interviews from the job fairs and I indeed got an interview. As you can see, my numbers aren't anything phenomenal. Don't know how much emphasis UPS puts on the job fairs but they aren't there just for kicks.

Bottom line - if you know what you want and you think the job fair will help, swallow your pride and principles, pay the dough and go try to get a job.

I have been to two of the Dallas job fairs one in 2000 and one in 2004 (after a furlough). In 2004 I went with the purpose to drop off my resume with UPS and Fedex and meet with their HR teams. UPS as well as JB did not accept any resumes from anyone, neither did they write down any names. At the time SWA and Fedex (and America West which I am sure is no player anymore), were the only two mayors worthwile going to the job fair for. If you do decide to go, don't bother going to the seminars, they are worthless for anyone with a little common sense and personality. ---- Kit Darby Lamborghini fund --- I like that.

The ONLY reason I went to Darby's (which was local for me) was to get an interview with AirTran and possibly help my chances at SWA or JBLU....skipped the whole first part and was first in line for FDX folks and then waited for AirTran for about 30-45 min. FDX or UPS could give a crap if you go...if no one walks your stuff in at either, I would not expect an interview with either one...FDX HR lady even asked me who i knew there. BTW, I never got the call from AirTran or JBLU, but did get SWA...was it due to the job fair? I doubt it...I think it was just my time. FDX and UPS called soonafter, but I had guys walk my stuff in there and UPS wasn't even at the job fair I went to...the FDX people did write my name down. My advice...ping on everyone you know where you want to work...my stuff was everywhere and I got some decent action, but I stayed after it for months and updated often. I don't know how much the fairs help, but they do get you 2-3 minutes with the HR people...it ain't much, but you can meet people there, too...I wouldn't have traveled to one though. Good luck!

How 'bout, "I know you there don't I?"

What kind of BS is that. I wish pilots would just come out and quiz the HR folks. "WHY ARE YOU HERE if all you do is ask us who we know there, what kind of help is that?" "Are you just here to look nice and smile?" "If you want to help why don't you show us a copy of the seniority list with contact numbers instead of asking stupid questions?"

Next time the ones with no real help should just put a cardboard picture of themselves up with "Please apply to us, we need the $50 to pay for our trip to the Job Fair"

The conference has some specifics that might be helpful in filling out apps, doing resumes. I wouldn't pay for any of the extras, though. Most of it is really a pep rally to get you excited about the grind of getting a job.

The only purpose of fair is to get an interview. Plato Rhyne Sr walked up to help staff the Delta booth and I hit it off with him personally in the few moments at the front of the long line. He wrote down a date on my resume and Delta called for an interview on that date. It works if you can make a contact that counts.

P.R. Sr was a true straight shooter and gentleman in the miserable job search process. I had gotten his office number from someone on a jumpseat once. HE ACTUALLY TOOK THE CALLS! The first time in '98 (and second and third in early '99) he said, ".. I really wasn't competitive yet and to keep doing what I was doing and call back in 6 months..." When on the 4th (late '99) call he said I was competitive, I got a letter 3 days later!

He was a true straight shooter. Heck, I had met Cecil Ewell and Bob Kudwa having been walked in to their office and for three years they each said to expect a letter any day. Any day took four years.

I got that Delta job with ZERO internal recommendations. Now in 2006, I have ~600 below me on the property and my DOH at AA is furloughed.
