1-800-UPS-PILO
Good afternoon. This is System Chief Pilot Pete Laurentz with the Chief Pilot Information Line for Friday, July 21, 2006.
To facilitate the growth of the Asia flight network and to enhance service to our customers, UPS Airlines will open a new pilot domicile in Anchorage, Alaska. The opening of this domicile will improve operational flexibility, efficiency and reliability. It will also allow the company to proactively address contingency situations in Asia.
Initially, the Anchorage domicile will be staffed by 80 MD-11 pilots, some of whom will be transfers and some of whom will be upgrades. The process of bidding for Anchorage opportunities will begin with a vacancy bid package that will go out by July 28 and will include specific instructions for crewmembers that want to add the ANC domicile or 747-400 choices to standing preference bids. This next bid will result in an increase of 20 MD-11 crews system-wide and will identify any excess positions in the SDF domicile. The plan is to grow the Anchorage domicile and adjust the size of SDF over a number of bids.
After the bidding, staffing and training processes are completed; the company anticipates that the domicile will be active no later than May 2007. The 747-400 will be added to the ANC domicile through a system bid in the spring of 2007 and training will be implemented at that time. Initially, crewmembers can expect to begin ground training in SDF and then travel to an offsite location for full-flight simulator training. Training is planned to first qualify new instructors and then train crewmembers holding a bid position for the fleet.
