Having only held using the UNS-1 a couple of times, I found myself poorly educated when recently I had to hold 10 south of a particular fix, with ten mile legs. I wasn't sure how to define this point, and was also unsure if using the ppos function was the way to go. Can someone clear this up for me? Thanks.

There are like 25,000 versions of the UNS1 (ok that's an exageration, but its only a small one) and yours may be a little different, but this should be pretty close. The "*" means that you push this button.

*NAV
*MNVR
*HOLDING DEFN

This should bring you to the screen that allows you to define the hold and the hold entry. Once you have it set like you want, arm the hold.

*ARM HOLD

DTO HOLD also works rather well too. I believe that's on the MNVR "define hold" page but I dont really know for sure

I probably should have read the question more closely. What I posted above would work as long as the waypoint was in the flight plan. To get a non-standard waypoint into the flight plan you would have to create a user defined waypoint. From there you can set the leg lengths and other specifics. If anyone knows of a more direct way to hold on a non-standard fix I'd like to know. The more I think about it the more I'm tempted to go out to the airplane and get the manual.

I would just select "direct to", type in the fix, enter, then select MNVR, hldg defn, then put in whatever constraints you want, this will keep the previously entered flight plan info in the box as well.

I actually did go to the manual but the answer alluded me. I understand how to hold using the UNS-1, generally speaking. The catch here is the location - not at a defined fix. I think maybe the answer lies in creating a user defined waypoint - which I've never done so I'll have to look more closely at that. Thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

Hey folks...from the for what its worth department, Universal puts on a real good nav course for their equipment in ICT. I think the instructors name is Mike Mihalek. It was free to us for some reason and for what these boxes cost you might get a freebie also.

I think I know what you are asking. When asked to hold 10 south of a fix, there is no fix. First thing is you must define a user defined waypoint (they will clear every powerdown). This eludes many on the UNS-1

Easiest wAy to do this is press DTO, and instead of a fix, type your own name for what you are about to define. So if its hold 10 south of Sea vor, I call my fix 10SEA (must be 5 letters).
When you type this fix and press enter( you can now define where it is located. In this case I would use the REF WAYPOINT fields. You'd type SEA for the waypoint, then 180, 10 nm.

Then, you can proceed direct to that waypoint. The rest above would be on the maneuver page.

Did I answer that?
