UAL Expects to Post 2Q Profit, Shares Jump Nearly 10 Percent
CHICAGO (AP) -- UAL Corp., the parent of United Airlines, on Monday said it expects to report a stronger-than-expected profit for the second quarter, driven by double-digit operating revenue growth and cost controls.
The profit from its first full quarter out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy would be the company's first since 2000.

Shares in the company jumped $2.67, or 9.9 percent, to $29.62 in morning trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

UAL estimated net income at $119 million, or 93 cents per share for the three months ended June 30 versus a loss of $26 million excluding reorganization and special items.

Excluding a severance charge of $22 million, earnings are expected to be $141 million. UAL said its effective tax rate is zero for the period.

Wall Street expects earnings of 46 cents per share, according to a Thomson Financial poll of nine analysts. Their estimates ranged from break even to a profit of 81 cents per share.

UAL expects operating revenue to rise 16 percent to $5.1 billion from $4.4 billion last year; operating earnings are pegged at $260 million compared with $48 million last year.

Analysts expect revenue of $5.04 billion.

The better-than-anticipated results come despite higher fuel costs that have hampered the airline industry. UAL expects to report that second-quarter average jet-fuel costs added 27 percent to $2.16 per gallon from $1.71 per gallon last year.

Revenue per available seat mile is estimated to have risen 12 percent to 12.03 cents.

"We expect to report results that exceed current second quarter consensus expectations because of the continuing benefits of our restructuring, strong revenue growth, and our cost control efforts," said Glenn F. Tilton, United's president, CEO and chairman.

UAL shares rose $1.53, or 5.7 percent, to $28.48 in premarket trading. The company plans to report second-quarter earnings July 31.

For the current quarter, UAL said it has 28 percent of its planned fuel consumption hedged at $1.66 per gallon, excluding taxes. The company anticipates third-quarter capacity -- measured by available seat miles -- to increase by 3 percent to 3.5 percent.

UAL said the second-quarter guidance is designed to help potential investors assess a $726 million debt offering mandated by the company's bankruptcy reorganization to take place by Aug. 1. UAL emerged from bankruptcy protection in February after 38 months.

In reality, is this really a profit considering what the employees have had taken from them? (and the same can be said for all the other companies who have taken givebacks from employees that are showing "profits")

You mean they cheated! Just like Southwest Airlines does with their fuel hedges!! Cheaters!!! Also, I'd like to add, I think its "bad karma" to be listing profits on this message board. Its like gloating. Wait until the Fed Ex guys here of this...they will rush to post their 1 billion dollar profit. Then tell us how awesome it is flying freight.

After it destroyed the UAL pilots. Doesn't seem that funny anymore, huh?

F9 Driver thanks for the post!

I had an Frontier Pilot on the jumpseat the other day going DEN-ORD in a FULL B767 but we still managed to get him a seat in the cockpit. Nice guy..(I think he spoke volumes about your pilot group and he remarked that he was surprised I went out of my way to accomodate him...I said no problema I am sure he would do the same) Anyways.....

So much for all the naysayers "Death to UAL"

Can't we all just get along and earn a living?

Damned if you do...Damned if you don't, There's no pleasing the naysayers 32....I wouldn't waste your time.
Let the boy's play, they'll get tired soon enough and have to take their naps.

I thought Indy did itself in with over expansion and very cheap fares. That and some high oil prices, mixed up with some incompetent management as well. Too bad. They had a good product and from what I saw, some good crewmembers. Jb hired many of them and they is all good peeps.

A lot of guys fail to think about those of us 2200 that were on furlough (some still on the big F) that didn't have much say in paycuts etc, WE WILL TRY again in 2009, just as SWA once did.

I am sure several guys working under the current contract are saying "Enough is enough" we need some improvements!

It will be interesting, but I smell a merger.

Glass of hater-ade table two please. Get over it they made money which last I checked was a good thing. I'm sure the majority of them and the UsAirways cats are over the smack many of the Indy people talked(and still do apparently) talked about those carriers.

This coming from a guy that had to break down the models on the version of 707's he flew? You want me to break mine down farther; -222, 223, 422, -7's,-9's, led sleds, etc?
It's ok I know you SWA guys have trouble with airplane envy. I enjoy my life and I hope you do also.

We own 384 of the 464 we operate. I wouldn't say we are envious of anyone.

I wouldn't view UAL as competition, more of a nuisance to the industry.

If you have a problem with one dude then fine but don't go pissin all over the company just because you don't get along with someone on a message board. But if you really think UAL is a "nuisance to the industry" FU. Oh, and good luck of course. I like SWA although I've never worked for them. I know one person doesn't represent the attitude of a whole company but seriously, a lot of SWA guys on this board seem to be di*kheads. Too many of you guys love to talk sh*t about other company's and throw your success in everyones face. I'm happy for you guys. You're lucky you were hired by a company that hasn't had the hardships that most companys in the industry have had.
But, you a-holes don't have to go pissing on everyone else to show love for your own company.

How lame is this forum gonna be if and when all of the airlines are successful? Truthfully, I hope all of these latest profit showing continue and some good news of success starts rolling in. Good job UAL. Your management doesn't necessarily deserve it, but all of the employees certainly do.
Here is to hoping JetBlue shows a profit tomorrow.

This above could have been posted on flightinfo in 1999. It could have been any airline talking about UAL.

Some chose to pick on the unknown little kid (with yellow, orange, blue and red hair) down the street at the forgotten airport, year after year calling him names....."hey you're runing the industry", "hey nice ugly airplane", "You guys work to hard", "You guys on B scale or something", "Do you have what it takes to be a United Pilot?"

....now that kid has grown up and you don't think a little payback is in order? I'd say your getting off light.

Its Human nature.
