Unique CASS jumpseat question...

My dad has just a little more than a year left as an AA Captain before he retires. I am a First Officer at Comair and I am wanting to suprise him by jumpseating on a few of his flights. However, I am not sure if AA has the same policy as Delta\Comair or if it is a TSA policy of no jumpseaters from other carriers in the jumpseat if there are open seats in the back. If this policy exists as it does at Comair does anybody know any ways to get this waived?

I was able to jumpseat with my Dad on his retirement flight before the advent of CASS. He put in a request with his CPO and they forwarded it to Delta's POI. Their POI contacted the XJT (my old company) POI and in turn contacted my CPO to verify my employment and viola, I had guaranteed jumpseat access. Of course, that precludes the act of suprising him.

I'm fairly certain its a universal policy. A friend of mine was in your same situation (except dad was retiring from Delta) and his dad had to work with his chief pilot to get an exception to this rule (signed off by the assistant to the regional manager, or something like that) and then I think my friend was put on the release or carried a letter of authorization with him, or something like that.

As far as surprising your dad, if you really want to do that, start by asking your jumpseat coordinator for help. He can maybe call over to his cohort at AA and make something happen. Good luck and congrats to your dad!

I was able to jumpseat on my dads last flight...with United. And to top it off, my grandparents where in the back. That was the one and only time I flew on one if "his" flights.

Here's what I would do if I was in your situation. Comair is CASS and is on our Unlimited Jumpseat list, so go to the gate and check in with the agent as a jumpseater. Even if she gives you a seat in the cabin, you still have to stop by the cockpit and meet with the Captain. When you do that, your old man will see you standing there and no matter what seat your boarding pass says, it's 1W for you! As long as you're from a CASS airline, it's the Captain's discretion as to where you sit.

I can't believe that he couldn't talk you into going into an honest profession!

Just make sure that they know you'll be up front in time so the load planner can include you up there on the W&B. That might spoil everything if they want to get sticky about it.

i have had friends jumpseat on my airline before with seats in the back, once the door closed "hey get up here dude" shut door and had at it. anyone that has a problem with it including the CAPTAIN i will gladly slap in the mouth.
