For some reason my original post was not saved and I don't know how to delete my original it, sorry.

My Grandad was an Army Air Corp (later Army Air Forces) pilot in WWII. I have his original uniform and wings but no medals. I was wondering who I can contact to get his medals or information on his medals.

I want to shadow box his uniform so as to perserve it and his memory. I appreciate all responses and insight.

Just an idea but do you have his DD214? It will list all his medals and then you will be able to buy replacement. If you don't have a copy of his DD214 you can go to the court house where he lived when he was released from the military and ask to see the "Soldiers and Sailors " records. He may have registered his DD214 incase he ever lost his original copy. By having it registered at the court house it makes it a legal document. His DD214 will have his service number on it. The military didn't start using social security numbers until the mid 70's.

Washington, DC keeps all of these records, you'll need to make a Military records request with the DOD. You fax them info including his DOB and any other info you can give him and your relation to him. I did this for my Grandpa for a gift to my Dad. I learned he joined the Marines on Dec. 8th 1941, where he was deployed, what medals he received, etc.

Definitely not hard to do. Google the info and you'll find what you need. Good luck.
