To the Katana in St. George that didn't cancel IFR a few days ago... that was uncool! Beautiful VFR day going into SGU. We're stuck up at the MEA in the clouds and the ice running an hour late with 25 passengers on board, while a Katana doing a training flight won't cancel their IFR til they're on the ground. Now, you and I know that LEGALLY we have every right to keep the IFR to the ground. No argument there, but that was just not being "avaition friendly". The weather was beautiful (9000 overcast). I even came up on CTAF and asked the pilot if they were in VFR conditions with an open IFR. ATC was bugging them too and telling them there was going to be a Brasilia holding behind them. I flight instructed for a long time and always cancelled IFR or held off an approach to let an air carrier or corporate jet into an uncontrolled field. I thought it was just being courteous. What do I know, though? Oh, and once ATC was able to get us lower and out of the clouds... I cancelled IFR so we could land. I kind of compare it to driving 55 in the fast lane. Is it legal? Yes, but not very nice! Fly safe everyone!

Oh... and Karma's a great thing!!

ahhhh, good ol' UVSC, I'll NEVER miss thee

what's worse, the stupid little Katana isn't even certified to go IMC, but can fly under IFR.

In situations like these it's easy to assume malice. More often than not, it's merely a case of incompetence.

Hmm, a katana in SGU, almost certainly UVSC. Yep definitely incompetence.

On behalf of all Pudknockers still grinding thru the ratings, allow me to apologize for #@$&ing up your personal universe. Please advise whenever Your Grace will be coming thru GSO so we will know to stay on the ground, stay out of your way, and marvel at your regional piloting awesomeness, as is appropriate.

Dude! Thanks for calling me awesome! You rock! Oh, and even if I was flying a C-152... I'd still make the same post, so chill out, man!

Always doing IOE... we've been busy as heck!

Thanks Minh, that'd be really nice!
Always an extra curtsy for those XJ ERJs, of course, Bluto. :D

I learned a long time ago not to get heartburn over things like a newbie student with a CFI telling the unicom they're over the lake when I see them clearly on final ... or the old, fat corp KA200 CA calling final when he's still two or three miles out (severe clear day, he musta been practicing the VOR-A) so everyone else in the pattern has to make a five-mile downwind ... etc. You know how it is.

I figured I'd live longer if I just got over that kind of stuff. :)

Bluto you just did a full years worth of posting in one day. Does this mean we'll not see you again for another year?
Gimme a hollar next time you are in town.

Shouldn't matter if it's an airliner, corporate jet, or another piston GA flight. If someone is waiting to go IFR and I'm in the clear on approach, I'll cancel almost every time I can. I can usually here the relief in the controller's voice every time I do.

It's not about one having priority over others. It's about burning fuel, a tight turn time, pissed off passengers, and just generally trying to keep a schedule. Often you rely on the outstations to quick turn you, as often you are delayed going back to your hub, then late getting out.....this makes for a loooooonng day.

DISCLAIMER---I used to care about the above things, now that we DON'T HAVE A CONTRACT, I am happy to sit at a low altitude and GUZZLE GAS (what's a couple extra thousand pounds among friends), also, the later the better--I'll flind something wrong with the plane at the outstation anyway...

We have been running into the same problem with a regional in CWA not canceling. Doing 170kts for the last 50 miles in hopes of not holding because of some Glufstream Academy turned jet pilot doesn't know the basics of operating IFR into an airport where the tower is closed. It happens to all of us at one time or another.
