Hi,

I have been away from flying for many years and just started up again(working on bfr/ipc and hopefully comm). I am having some issues that i have never had in the past maybe cause i am a lot older now and a different person, but my training is not going so hot. I seem to be forgetting some of the basic things whan i am with my instuctor even after i have gone over the material at home. Granted i am working full time (not really an excuse) but these are things I KNEW in the past but am embarrased when put on the spot and answer with a stupid remark /only to have my instructor smirk and laugh at me under his breath during preflight. I have only been back up about 8hrs now and things are starting to pick up slooowly but man do i feel out of place! I guess my real question is has anyone had this experience before and should i have to feel humiliated in order to regain my confidence? I feel i need to speak with him about how i can start feeling comfortable again in this environment.

Thanks for the replies,

You can do better. No matter what you do, be it fabricate an excuse or tell him straight up, get a new instructor...you shouldn't have to put up with this.

You may want to evaluate the way in which your instructor is perceiving your interest in your training. Make sure you dont give the impression that you aren't studying, or taking your training serious. As an instructor its difficult when a student responds with off the cuff answers or trys to BS their way through when they don't really know. There is no excuse for an instructor to laugh at a student. But if you set a tone with him that you aren't taking things serious he may be less willing to engage your training 100%. Definately have a chat with him and see if there aren't other ways to approach whatever issues you are having.

I agree, i thought things were progressing and i said something stupid in response to a question about systems while i was preflighting and he thought that i did not catch him smirking at me. I am 37 and he is probably about 23/24 so there is some age difference here, but that is not enough in my opinion to be an issue. I am SURE that during his training he said stupid things he may have not really meant to say, so i hope i can confront this issue with this guy without a scene. I definitely do not want to feel like i am wasting my time and $$ when i know all i need is to regain my confidence level and it will all come together again.

This may be your First Lesson in decision making, politely confront him on the issues or drop him and find another instructor. There are many out there that would like to have your money!

Your not paying him to laugh at you!!!!

Sounds to me like a total case of immaturity on his part. While he may have the edge on you in training it appears his emotional maturity isn't up to par for his position.

Ask youself this question....is he genuinely concerned about providing quality flight instructon or do you get the impression that he using you to build time?

I, of course, use my students to build time, but I NEVER let on about it, NEVER talk about which regional is hiring when students or customers are around and I work my a$$ off to make dang sure that I'm the best instructor that I can be at my level of experience. I have students request me all of the time and the vast majority of instructors that they dump can't shut up about getting out of instructing and going to the regionals.....even in front of their students.

It sounds like your guy might need the edges knocked off of him....requesting another instructor will benefit both of you.

Good luck!

Get rid of that guy fast. He's a young CFI who thinks he know's it all. I bet if you had him preflight an RJ he'd come up with some pretty stupid things himself. What a loser.

Don't let this jacka$$ keep you from flying or allow him to intimidate you.

Are there any more mature instructors you can fly with?
