I am about to start at NJA in the ultra on would appreciate any headset reccomendations. Also any speculations on HBA coming back? Just kidding about the HBA, there have not been enough threads about that......

I just left the 560 fleet, I used the QC2 with the U Fly Mike adaptor and loved it. Works great when up front and even better in back airlining. If you plug it in you will almost forget that you are on a 5 hour airline in the middle seat with kids screaming around you.

I use a telex 850 (that's the ANR without the battery pack.) If you use the headset in the plane, plan on also wearing earplugs with it.

Other people I fly with use the real Bose aviation headsets, never seen the U Fly Mic thing, but have heard good reviews, just make sure to have an extra battery, as if the battery dies it does not failsafe like a "Aviation" headset. I guess it gives plenty of warning though.

Personal opinion: I think that they may add a couple HBA's if they start running out of qualified applicants, or if they think it will save them money in pilot retention. Eliminating the HBA's will be a goal for the next contract I think.

I use the Clarity Aloft headset on the Sovereign. Weight is a couple of ounces.....so light you forget it's on. The headphone speakers are embedded in foam earplugs which almost totally block outside noise. I have to take one out to hear a pax if they come up front. About $500, but for me worth every penny. They say their replaceable foam plugs last about a month, but I use mine for months with no problem. The band goes behind your head and hooks over your ears like reverse eyeglasses. Very comfortable. Go to their website and check them out. Get the stereo version, not the one with the push to talk switch.

I just reread the message I wrote, to clarify if you use the telex 850 that works fine by itself, but if you use the telex 750 (the model in all of the ultra planes at Netjets), you will need to also wear earplugs.

The Bose QC2/UFLY Mike set-up is perhaps the best thing I have bought for work... ever.

Those who are worried about the battery discharging have never used the unit. There is a red indicator light that flashes for HOURS. A quick check of the red light to see if it is steady or flashing somewhere in the last 2-3 hours of the flight will determine if a battery change (takes 3.2 seconds) is necessary.

I love this product and any pilot with at least a sprinkling of common sense can operate it.

What he said. Although my best time on battery replacement was only 4.1 seconds. Then again, I always have been a little slow....

Yeah, the ultra has 3 telex 750 headsets in the plane (2 up front, one in the kit for a observer.) I would guess about 1/2 the pilots use their own, for comfort or hygenic reasons.

Bose QC2/UFLY Mike...hands down. Had the clarity aloft...and the earplug thing just wasnt for me (may work for you though...many swear by it).

I've been using the Telex 850 in the Encore for almost 2 years and it works quite well. The QC2/UFlyMike combo is another popular option.

I have the bose X. I wouldn't spend a dime on any thing else.

I wore earplugs for the longest time. I've tried the qc2, but it's night and day difference b/t them and the X

The biggest difference being there's no MP3 input on the X. I've used 'em both and I'll stick with the QC2 / Uflymike thank you very much.

Yup same...I actually sold my Bose X once I got the QC2. Ill admit...its not quite as quiet, but its still great and even more comfortable. Im sure it really depends what aircraft you are in though.

true no mp3 plug ins but the X is a really great set and you dont have to turn them on
unless there is no one on board

I agree on the Bose X- expensive, yet one of the best investments I ever made... it has greatly reduced fatigue. I do hear great things about the QC2/U4M combo but wanted the extra protection of the full X, as well as the ability to use it in some private GA flying and instructing that I occasionally do. As for MP3 adapter for non QC2's, there is at least one out there for all headsets and I'm going to try it out- will report back.

Had the QC2 / Ufly set up for about a month and will never use anything else. Almost as quiet as the Bose X but more comfort, lighter, more versatile, more compact, half the price, and now comes with a nice little MP3 player.

Hmmm...does the QC2/UFly setup work well in piston aircraft? I'd be all about the Bose X, but it's a bit cost prohibitive at the moment. The QC2 would be much more in my price range, but I wouldn't want to drop that kind of money unless I knew I'd be better off than with my DCs.

Can't speak for the QC2 but my X seems to have some pretty decent passive protection (ANR doesn't cover the entire frequency band), though its 10x more comfy than my DC's ever were. Granted, the QC2/UFM users like its comfort (esp lightness) more than the X, and obviously the X is too dorky to wear on an airliner, but it has been sheer heaven for me as an Ultra headset. The price is ridiculous but the zero-interest deferred payment scheme at least makes it feel painless.

It will work you just have to figure out if your jacks are stereo or not. You can call ufly and ask mike if you don't know.

I used a Telex Airman 750 in the 560. No earplugs, captain used the hand mic on his side so I had to leave one ear unobstructed so I could hear either the challenge or the response.

BTW -- Irish, that has to be my favorite SNL one-liner! Right up there with Will Ferrell playing Harry Carey next to Jeff Goldblum on his science show. Sorry, back to the flying.

Mostly I'm concerned about the noise reduction. It seems as though that most people who use the QC2/UFly combo are jet pilots...

If you're (or anyone else) is looking for a nice headset for prop noise reduction, I have a LightSPEED Twenty 3G headset I'm no longer using and looking to sell. Got moderate usage while I was flying 1900s. Not showroom new, but a new headpad, earseals, mic muff, and works great. I haven't put an ad up in buying & selling yet (too lazy), but asking $275. Drop me a PM if interested.

I use the lightspeed mach 1. I like them. They weigh an 1 once and you could plug your mp3 player into it for the long flights.
