From what I understand, it is a money issue. New paint jobs on aircraft are being done at a constant rate. And sometimes the airline can save money by designing a new paint job using more cheaper paint colors.

One classic example that I know about is NWA'a new paint scheme. The red color that was very dominate on the top 3rd of the aircraft was one of the most expensive paint colors. So then they design a paint scheme that has less red, and each A/C paint job is then cheaper.

So, looking at the UAL new paint, I can assume that the grey and dark blue were a spendy paint color, so now they too are going white dominate.

Side note...NWA's new scheme, I think, looks pretty sharp, especially up against a white, snowy ground. EXCEPT it drives me crazy how the logo on the right side of the tail is pointing to the wrong cardinal direction. (NE) Any comments?

Wow... United is piggy-backing on JetBlue's corporate identity. How original.

And, with at least 5 paint colors and the logo decals, I really wonder if this new "goofy" paintjob is cheaper than their old "goofy" paintjob.

I like the new UAL colors it still has the old UAL colors and you know its UAL airlines when you look at it , unlike the NWA Diet coke can paint job. Every time I see the new NWA paint job i think I could go for a Diet coke right about now. take a diet coke can lay it down, there you have it, the new NWA paint design.

So I guess you like the old NWA paint scheme better?

The new one uses fewer colors, will last longer, & is more cost effective.

Every time I see the paint job I think of a Coors Light Can! Not only that but is the N W A suppose to support the rap band from the 80's?

I can see the similarities......there's so much red on a Coors can.

The rap band actually paid for the new paint job as a promotional venture. We will be able to evaluate the success of it shortly.
what's really sad is all the parked UAL jets in the background; even a 400!
Paint it and fly it to the bone yard!

At least it doesn't look as bad as the Air Wisconsin paint job on the CRJs. It just doesn't look right.

I think United could have done better.
