July 16, 2006 United Airlines said on Saturday that it is moving its headquarters and 350 employees from a Chicago suburb to the city's downtown district in early 2007.
United Airlines, a unit of UAL that emerged from three years of bankruptcy on February 1, also will consolidate several facilities at its current headquarters in Elk Grove Township, near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
Under the agreement, United is receiving USD$5.25 million in tax increment financing from the city of Chicago and USD$1.35 million in grants from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for infrastructure improvements and job training, according to a news release.
In addition, both the city and the state will propose legislation to cap the jet fuel tax for the next five years.
The new headquarters will be at 77 W. Wacker Drive, the airline said.
United Airlines had said earlier this year it might move its headquarters to its hubs in Denver or San Francisco.

I thought their HQ was in Chicago? Not close enough I guess. Look at the great incentives they received, good for them... I wonder how much Mayor Daley is going to get contributed to his campaign fund?

If the street name was "Wacky Drive", then it would be all too fitting for UAL management.

It doesn't make any sense. Right now they are right next to O'Hare. Now they want to move 23 miles Southeast into Chicago.

Check the map here,

What do they gain by moving to downtown Chicago, better digs for the executives? More things to waste money on? An office on the 78th floor of some sky scraper? I mean it's really important to be right across the river from Marina City, and a few blocks away from just about everything.

I'm thinking the execs want to live closer to downtown. They are flush with cash from bonuses and want to enjoy their new found wealth.

Besides, how can you really lose touch with the reality of the operation if you actually live near the airport? Sheesh, give me a break!

By leasing this property, they can un-lease 3 other properties, and consolidate all their operations into the Elk-Grove Campus. They couldn't bring everyone under one roof without the new office space. With the incentives from Chicago to help, it may still cost a bit more at first, but will drive more efficencies and ya have to think by not leasing three other buildings in three other towns around the city, it will save money in the long run.

Holy crap, I think I just sounded like an Executive VP.

Consolidate, incentives, efficencies...

It does make since though.

They couldn't find new office space that wasn't on the river. Looks like a pretty tony address.

Glenn Tilton lives on the Gold Coast just off of Lakeshore Drive. Just a short limo ride to the new HQ. No kidding.
