U.S. coastline definition

I usually seem to be able to find these things, but for some reason have not had much luck with this. Does anyone know the reference for where the U.S. coastline is defined to be? There are some areas that could be construed islands by some and not by others, for example.

Coastline...like Contiguous US ADIZ? Or the coastal waters around the US that then turn into International Waters at some point? Or ...
