I've heard that it's possible to get the military to pay or in some way supplement the cost of a type rating. Is this true? If so, does anybody know the name of this program or who I would need to contact in order to get more details?

Call VMGR-352 (858-577-1011) at Miramar MCAS. Some of those boys, and gals have done it.
 
You are probably thinking of the Montgomery GI Bill. The VA pays a percentage of training costs for aviation if you go to a VA approved program.

If you are academy grad or ROTC scholarship you are probably out of luck.

The ANG has a separate program that costs you nothing but gives almost the same benefits. You can actually have both the active duty and the guard GI Bill at the same time, but this is a rare event.

Contact your education office. This should have been covered when you inprocessed at your first duty station.

The only way to a free type rating via the AF is to fly a military version of a civilian equivalent airplane. So a T-1 student can get a Be-400/Mu-3000 at graduation, go on to fly C-21s and get a LR-35 type rating, get a follow on to KC-135s and get the B-707 and then transition over to KC-10s and then get the DC-10 type on their ticket. That is the most free type ratings you can get and should keep you busy for a good 14 years.

Another "free" type rating is the little known BE-1900. All it costs is a year of your life in Korea, flying the C-12J.

Or go to the 89th at Andrews and get types in a Gulfstream, 737, 747, or 757. Usually only one in a tour, somethimes two.

You may also have been thinking of the short-lived PA20 program. Phoenix Aviator was a program where the AF promised to get you back into the cockpit for your last tour prior to retirement and would pay for an ATP among other benefits. It was intended to induce pilots to stay to 20 rather than leave for an airline job early. It has since been cancelled.
 
I'm active duty Navy and MGIB picked up 60% of my 737 type rating. Cost at Higher Power Aviation in Dallas was $7380, just got a check back from the VA for $4428. Higher Power takes care of all the paperwork for you and does a great job of training. SWA people department will come and speak with your class during your two-week stay at HPA. Highly recommended, best wishes in your training.
 
I'm an USAFA puke who didn't get anything paid for. You can write off the cost on your taxes, so consider that a 10-20% discount once you get your income tax return. The best scam, assuming it still exists, was getting a type in aircraft you were checked out in that have civilian designations. I got an L-300 (c-141) type put on my license as a First Pilot when I lived in Charleston, SC, simply by bringing my flight records and logbook to the FSDO. When I returned from flying the C-12J (Beech 1900C) in Korea, I did the same thing in San Antonio, brought in my logbook and flight records, and walla!, I had another type on my FAA license, for free. I see that Kikuchiyo did the same.

Army Regs (and I am sure the others, as well) allow an FAA inspector to be on the aircraft, in the course of a normally scheduled checkride, to issue an airman's certification. This includes ATP and type certification.

The only catch is to get an FAA inspector to put his/her coffee cup down and get out of the office on the day and time a checkride is scheduled. Forget night time.
