What does a type rating really mean if you have no 121 time or time in rated type?

Will it help you get hired?

are there any type rating restrictions without time in type?

Any info appreciated!! THanks~

Type ratings

The long and short of it, not much.

I bought a Citation type because I thought it would give me an edge over my regional airline competition, who were primarily flight instructors. I figured that the type would demonstrate several things, such as (1) that I can be typed; (2) that I had knowledge of turbine equipment; (3) that I could fly turbine equipment to standards, and (4) that I had experienced crew concepts. I also got it because at that time American Eagle was using a Citation sim to evaluate applicants.

Well, I cannot draw a connection to getting the type and getting interviews, which finally happened a couple of months after getting the type. And, having flown the airplane did not help me one iota in the AEX Citation sim. Sims never "fly" like airplanes.

I think the type helped me get the more senior instructing jobs I wanted after I essentially had put my quest for a regional job on the back burner.

While I enjoyed my week getting the type and wrote it off on my taxes, I seriously doubt it helped me get interviews. You need time in type along with the type rating for it to be at all meaningful. I understand that sometimes the FAA will issue a type rating with an SIC restriction. I did not have such a restriction on my Citation type.

Hope that helps.

A Type rating without any appreciable Time-In-Type is pretty much worthless (Except maybe a B-737 Type to get an SWA interview). The 121 time isn't a factor related to the Type, it is Time-In-Type that is important...

Don't waste your money...

I agree with Falcon Capt., you are wasting money.

The insurance carrier's have tightened the minimums on rental pilots, too. Our current policy wants pre-approval, or 500 hours turbojet and 50 hours make and model and simulator based training within the last 12 months on that make and model.

Never heard of a s.i.c. restriction on a type rating considering you don't need to be type rated to act as s.i.c. in an acft requiring a type and 2 crew.

SIC

Cdog, When discussing type rating, if a SIC restriction is discussed, we are not refering to the pilot holding the type being restricted to flying SIC. We are referring to the typed Pilot being required to have a SIC with him/her when operating that aircraft. It is not an uncommon restriction. It is issued when the type rating applicate in an aircraft that is type certificated for single pilot operation can not or does not demonstrate the ability to operate the aircraft single pilot. A large number of pilots type in Metros and 1900's have this restriction. You also now see it on pilots typed in Citations. You do not see it on earlier Citation types.

As for an SIC not requiring a type, under 121 Flag Operations, the SIC is required to be typed.

I forgot about single-pilot type ratings for certain acft. Are they restricted to pt. 91 or 135 freight?
there are alot of U.S. airlines that use f.o.s without type ratings. As long as they have the approved training and recurrent training in type.

SIC

The typed SIC only applies to Flag Carrier operations under 121. reference 121.437.

Single pilot operations only apply to 91 and 135 cargo operations. However, I have heard, with no proof either way, that the CitationJet is approved for 135 passenger single pilot. Again not proof that I have seen. though.
