I was recently awarded a scholarship to receive a PIC type rating in a Citation II aircraft from Flight Safety. With my current flight hours I meet all the requirements for the ATP except 80 hours of cross country. I was wondering what the difference was between getting a type as a commercial and as an ATP? Does it transfer? What are my chances of landing a job as a typed commercial? I am trying to make the right decision about whether to wait or not.

The type rating will automatically transfer when you get your ATP. There is no difference, other than the type ride is going to be very close to an ATP ride, and usually Flight Safety will not charge extra to get an ATP. Even if they do, its worth it.

Get the type ! When you get your ATP it will be there! Get the 80 hours as quickly and painlessly as possible. Someone else had a very good suggestion !

It depends on the examiner. Some will transfer they types onto the ATP and others will not. I have experience with both. Those that don't, the type will transfer onto your ATP, but only with commercial privledges, unless you take your ATP ride in the same type of AC. Same reason you will only have comm privledges for ASEL, ASES, etc. So, just wait until you get the x-c time then get it. And the type ride is exactly the same as an ATP ride except for the time requirements and written exam.

I disagree. I have 2 types I got before my ATP. My liscense has no limitations. I have atp privelages with all of them.

You need to show that examiner the ATP/type rating PTS. It specifically states that the type ratings in the same category and class airplane are to transfer to ATP status upon passing of that category and class ATP checkride in ANY airplane....
example You have a commercial multi land.... have a ce-500 and da-10 type. you can take your ATP checkride in a seminole and those type ratings are supposed to move to the ATP level. Now if you had other limitations such as second in command required or circle VMC only, ect. on the type ratings those limits would continue on.

now if you took the ATP in a skylane only (ASEL) and still had multiengine commercial privleages then yes those types would stay at the commercial level on the new ATP certificate.

Thanks for the info. If this is the case, if I meet the requirements, is Flight Safety capable of making my type ride my ATP ride? Provided I take the written in advance.

Yes, as long as you bring your written test and meet all of the time and age requirements, FSI should give you the ATP and type together. Just make sure you tell them when you show up. Doesn't hurt to remind the sim instructor too when you get to that point.

Also, take a look at the definition of cross country. I forget the specifics but I remember something to the effect that the 50 plus mile cross country requirement is specific to obtaining experience for certain ratings. Im sure you've flown to a different airports x amount of times. Is ATP one of them...I dunno and i'm too tired to look it up, but you might want to.

good luck
