DC-9-10 and the B-717, same type. Differences training is all you need. Now for the pilot going from the -10 to the B-717 that ground school and sim might be 6 weeks long. BTW if this is the case why is the DC-6 and the DC-7 different type ratings?
 
The 747-400 IS a different type because there is no flight engineer on that model. The 1,2, and 3 hundred series are the same.
I've wondered why some types are the same and others aren't too... Like after flying a Lear 31A for a while then having to do a trip in a 25D.... How in the world is that the same type... I'd say (based on sitting in a 45 but never flying it) that the 31 and 45 are a lot closer than any 20 series and the 31.
Same goes for the old 737-100 or -200 compared to the new models rolling off the line today....
