Pilots grounded during Bush visit

By DAVE SHEELEY

Posted: Feb. 21, 2006

Waukesha - Two pilots were forced to land during the time President Bush was in the Milwaukee area Monday, the U.S. Secret Service said Tuesday.

The incidents were similar in that each pilot was unaware of a no-fly zone restriction in effect during the presidential appearance, said Marianne Kenny, resident agent in charge of the Milwaukee office of the Secret Service.

The Secret Service, which interviewed the men, said the pilots had no ill intent and will not be cited.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the planes to land at Crites Field during Bush's visit.

At the request of the Secret Service, the FAA had advised air travelers that the skies above the Milwaukee area would be restricted between 10:40 a.m. and 1 p.m., the times in which Bush arrived and departed, Kenny said.

Bush was visiting both Milwaukee-area offices of Johnson Controls, a corporation that helps companies save energy. During his visit, he promoted his energy initiative he outlined in the State of the Union speech last month.

These Presidential/VIP TFRs are such BS. 30 Mile radius up to FL180. Bush goes to MKE once or twice a year it seems. Everytime he visits there are people being forced down. Couple years ago there was an instructor and a student from the Chicago area that decided to head up that way. They got a little off course and got forced down.

Man, if everytime you put one of these up there are people getting violated, then there is a problem with the system. Do something about it and stop harassing the little guy. Take a look someday at the pre 9/11 TFR violations compared to the post 9/11 TFR violations. I forget, but it was something like less than 20 every year before 9/11/01. Now it is something like 400 per year. Anybody see a problem? Perhaps Bush should stop traveling so much. Does he not realize the kind of pressure his visits put on the local economy? Closing streets, highways, airspace, and so much more. Please go back to the old non-super sized TFRs or stop traveling.

Does make you wonder, dun't it.

I wonder - do you reckon these TFRs have made anyone safer reeeaaaally, - or is perhaps that making things "safer" may not be the real objective here.

One thing I have learned is, when things do not make sense - think politics.

I heard that a few aircraft were escorted down in the Tampa area last Friday when the president was in town. The real pain in the a$$ is the situation on the roads. I lived in Columbus, Ohio during the election and it seemed like highways and roads were being shut down every other week (more right before the election). Unfortunately, the president likes to hold his "everyone who agrees with me is welcomed to come" town hall meetings in the Tampa area as well. I should have moved to the west coast.

Flying over the northern US yesterday I heard an airplane being intercepted on 121.5. It was sobering, because it could happen to any of us based on how shitty the TFR system is.
