First of all, Hope everyone's new year is starting off right! I have several interviews upcoming and one of them happens to be with Trans States. I spoke with Kathy the other day and she said something about being able to put a standing bid in for CA after completion of training. Is TSA infact hiring street captains or do you have to complete training and then bid. Mind you, I have no experience in the EMBs. Would any Waterskiers care to share their opinion or advice? Thanks for your time and input.

two of my friends are at TSA right now. not a great quality of life compared to other regionals, but they are just waiting for their 23rd birthday to upgrade, thats all they're waiting on. they haven't advertised hiring captains though.

that's what i thought, but it sounded like she said they were going to be hiring street captains. maybe i misheard her but who knows. thanks

I might be wrong, but as I recall Trans States already faced a pretty costly grievance the last time they hired street captains.. or CQFOs.. or whatever they called them back then. At any rate, I think it cost the company a lot of back pay to people who were bypassed. So I'd be surprised to have Trans States walk down that road again. No matter how crappy a company it is or how ignorant management is...

Yeah, the CQFO grievance will likely cost them some $$$. However, hiring guys who will be able to hold captain right out of training is not a contract violation if their seniority will actually hold it. Not sure whether that is the case right now but I kind of doubt it. Upgrades are pretty quick right but not THAT quick; if you have the time, you might be able to hold capt within a few months after training...

One quick word of warning; this company was furloughing in recent past. There has been no new flying so all this hiring and upgrading is for attrition only. Should the attrition slow or any flying be lost, you could find yourself in the right seat for a long time or even on the street.

I had a standing bid in for every base as a captain for over five years. They never got to my number. Standing bid is just your preferences when it comes to your seniority number, like a line bid every month.

I would say that if you had the time to upgrade then you would probably spent about 6 months in the right seat before you went to upgrade. You would be on reserve forever because the more senior FOs would finally get the age or time to upgrade and keep pushing you down. QOL on reserve sucks with 10 days off per month and only 3 "golden days off" which can't be moved. The other 7 days off per month can and will be moved by the company on a semi regular basis (not every month but pretty common) So being on resreve and planning anything on any days except those 3 golden days is sketchy at best. Seems like in the winter months the reserve guys almost never fly, but in the summer the reserve guys fly so much that they are usually a walking 30 in 7 disaster. And get used to uncommutable schedules with early shows on day 1 and getting home round midnite on day 4. Like Millhouse said we wont hessitate to downgrade and furlough and we are not getting any new flying so if attrition slows or stops you could find yourself back to the right seat (if you got to the left at all) or on the street with pretty much no notice.

No need to sugarcoat it. :p

Unless you are certain that an upgrade would be in the NEAR future, I wouldn't go to TSA. There are better regionals out there with the same/better equipment.

For a person with your expereince, I would go only if you can get bumped up in 6 months and you live in one of the domiciles.
