Today I was in PIT on my way to work and got bumped off a TSA flight that was weight restricted to 46. The gate agent said that they had been having those same problems with only TSA jets that day. Sounded kinda odd to me, but the flight next door was restricted to 46 too.

Any Insight? Not a stab at TSA, I'm always happy for the ride! :D

This is just the result of curiosity and free-wireless internet while waiting for my next shot.

TSA has 145's with out reversers. The loss of that weight has created W&B problems where they're easly weight restricted.

TSA's passengers weigh 197 pounds, summer weights. The E145 simply wasn't designed to carry a full boat of those weights. BTW it's usually a MZFW limitation and not MTOW. Even TSA pilots know better than to commute on TSA planes.

That explains it. I heard the captain muttering something about ZFW when he got the paperwork, myself and 3 revenue pax got the ax. I didn't feel like bothering the guy since they were already running late.

Clarification

TSA operates for USAirways with ERJ145 ERs which is "sometimes" weight restricted due to a difference in engine vs. the LR model that the airline operates under other codeshares.
 
Even without a 197 lb passenger number the 145 ER's at COEX are constantly running into Zero Fuel Weight issues. They are not 47 passenger aircraft for the most part.

Coex has ERs??? I thought they only had LRs and XRs....

Continental Express was the launch customer for the EMB-145, therefore they have some of the oldest ones made. If I remember correctly, we have 23 145 ERs and a handfull of 135 ERs. Zero fuel weight is usually always the limiting factor on the ERs. It's essentially a 46 passenger airplane. If the bags weigh more than 1,800 pounds with no half-weights, it won't even take 46 people. It can't tanker much gas either because then it'll run in to a max landing weight problem.

To put things very simply...the aircraft on the US Air side that you're refering to are most 145 ER's. ER's suck. As stated...you'll run into a ZFW issue almost every time you have about 47 pax(depending on the number of bags). After that, the airplane is highly suceptable to a decreased takeoff weight due to not burning enough fuel. In PIT it happens a lot because most of our legs are very short(blocks of around an hour for the most part) with a burn of less than 3000ibs. TSA does have 4 LR's that operate on the US Air side, in which case you'll rarely have a problem. Half of the time they are going to MSP, STL, or YUL due to the fact that they carry an extra 2200 ilbs of fuel. TWA Dude summed it up best..."Even TSA pilots know better than to commute on TSA planes"

To others: TSA's winter weight is 203. STL pax are apparently very fat -- I don't live there anymore so I don't count.

Being that you are a "Midwesterner" like the rest of us here in the land of cheese, beer, and brats you still count. Good thing there's a lot of extra room in the front of the "bus"....I'm thinking I'm going to have to go on a diet since I'll probably be flying this lawndart for the rest of my career. Hope things are going well.
 
Hey Over, I'm now officially a cheezehead (again!). Just closed on my house near UES. Half the time I commute to PHX on good old YX. Ya never know, man, I wouldn't bet on your being stuck at TSA for eternity. Stay cool.
