I'm just about finished with my MEI initial. I did it in my Duchess which is flown and maintained under Part 91 with annual (not 100 hour) inspections.

I may want to give my son dual instruction in my airplane for his ME rating. My read of the FAR's is that flight instruction for "hire" requires a 100 hour inspection routine. In the instance where the instruction is given for free, including aircraft cost, is there a problem?

In the case of giving instruction "for free" to family members, I think you are safe. I don't think an FAA inspector will 'come after' you on this point.

However, the overall FAA interpretation of 'hire' is in the word 'compensation'.

Compensation does not necessarily mean money changes hands. Compensation can be anything the FAA can dream up that you might benefit from, so "free" doesn't get you out of the "for hire" boat all by itself. It is an individual call.

You are also in the clear for a 100hrs after the annual for compensation as well. So if it had a recent annual and doesn't fly much, no worries either.

Like Nosehair said if it is for family and nobody is getting paid, I can't see the local FSDO giving you much grief.

Agreed. That'd be akin to the FAA forcing my father in law to 100 hour his cub when he gave me tailwheel instruction. I just can't see them making an issue of you giving your son instruction in your airplane.

I remember being warned a long time ago about "compensation" being considered other than money. seriously, flight time alone is compensatory in a way. its furthering my experience/career.
