This would be considered a "calm" day - a good day for one's first solo!

That's the norm in Illinois, land of the flat and windy. I had a student who learned to land with a crosswind. During the whole semester, there was never a flight period that there wasn't a crosswind component to every runway near our home base.
 
I grew up in Chicago so I know how it gets. My buddy once mentioned that it was windy. My reply, "They dont call it the land of tranquility...beeeeeyyyyyyoooottttccccchhhhh!!
 
Actually, Chicago is called the windy city because some editor in New York called them that. It was around 1890 and Chicago kept saying it was on the upswing and would soon be the second biggest city, after Philadelphia. He coined the phrase and it stuck.

Agreed. I do my flying in Stillwater though :p
 
yeah...y'all out here in Okla-freakin-homa do get some wind. There were some G37 days we still went up....okie dokie...man...really taught me to really appreciate the rudder that day.
